1JZ Options for MA61

Hey guys,
Well I have read a lot of info on the swap and have many of the parts needed (engine mount, front sump ect.) and it is finally time to purchase the halfcut.
I have done some calling around and have 2 possibilities the first is a JZA70 Halfcut 91 model 100000km, and the second is a 93 Auto Soarer halfcut, auto removed and a W58 from 95 supra and associated bits thrown in. Both are about the same price and as I see it both have their advantages/disadvantages, just wondering what you guys would choose and why?
Cheers Buccy
PS. Website detailing swap is under construction will let you know when it goes live. Fingers crossed it'll be as good as Norbie's

You're going to need a JZX80-110 Chaser/Cresta/MkII sump and pickup to slot it into your engine bay. So, you could either get the whole Chaser engine or one of the motors you've mentioned along with the Chaser sump. I used a JZX90 engine - which has many minor, but anoying little differences to other 1JZ's. If you can get the front-sump of a Chaser, I'd grab that Soarer halfcut with the JZA80 W58 gearbox.

As I said earlier I already have a front sump for a JZ that is the first thing a did (thanks BlackSupra for that bit of advice), so that eliminates the need to find a Chaser Half Cut and save a few $$$. Any reasons why you'd choose the Soarer over the JZA70?

Sorry, my bad I was reading/writing while printing off bits of the TSRM and not paying enough attention. JZA80 boxes (with clutch, flywheel, etc.) aren't cheap - I think I paid about $900 for mine. Getting that thrown in is a hell of a bonus! Other than that, I'm not aware of any significant differences between a JZA70 and Soarer that should sway you either way. It guess it comes down to general condition of each motor. But getting that manual Supra box is a hell of a sweetner.

Get the soarer with the 2JZGE W58 box, but make sure it comes with a 1jz manual ECU. If it doesnt, talk to someone about 'fooling' the auto speed sensor.
Will save alot of hassles.
Then call this mob:
Bonneville Automotive (02) 9546 7077
They have JZ -> MA61 engine mounts for $250.
Will bolt straight in.

Hey thanks BlackSupra I took your advice back in July and got those mounts from Bonneville so everything is pretty much right to go, just need the halfcut now. I have a friend how runs a Performance Shop who is a dealer for Haltech and he is getting me an E6X at pretty much cost price so that should make wiring the thing a lot easier.
It seems both of you have gone for the Soarer and reason behind this? I know that if I get the W58 it will pretty much bolt straight in making things a little easier. Is it worth the trouble getting the JZA70 and R154 box and getting a custom drive shaft or will the W58 stand up alright behind a 1JZ?

- Custom tailshaft
- shifter sits a fair distance further back and tranny tunnel needs to be cut to accomodate.
- gearbox crossmember will have to be changed
- gearbox won't sit level in the tranny tunnel (tailshaft will be slightly out putting extra strain on uni)
- really expensive to replace
I shall post some threads when i find them.
You have a PM.

soarer cut, JZA80 box.
if you are gonna go for over 400 RWHP then consider the JZA70 cut and R154, As long as you dont mind using a slow shifting truck box......
(i realize the controversiality of my statement all you R154 fans,.....but bite me.............)
good luck with the conversion, and go with the soarer cut.
small tip, easiest place to run the intercooler piping is down through the front corners of the engine bay, there are two small black steel flaps, one on either side, remove them( 3 spot welds per side) and run the piping through there, it comes out in a very convenient spot and doesnt reqúire that you massacre your car, or remove structural metal.

He's talking about the brackets the caster rods bolt to, and the front corners of the engine bay. Have a look and you'll see what he means.
PS get a 2JZ.

Thanks Guys
Guess the soarer is the way to go then. Hopefully will take a good look at it this weekend and get the ball rolling. Jaze thanks for the tip I will remember that when the time comes.
Norbie I'd love to go 2JZ but finding one at a decent price is a mission (Got Quoted $4400 for an Aristo cut missing intercooler) then I have to find a Gearbox that can handle it so I don't run into some of the problems you have had. Who knows if the soarer thing falls through I might go that way.

Well, i dont think i need to elaborate much more than glens picture, cheers for that
I have run my cooler piping through here on both my 1J conversions, some say its a little small, but ive had no issues.
Life on the otherside is a little lacklustre with no car/cars to while a way a good portion of my time and money, however i have had the chance to do a little saving so when i get back i can more than make up for missed time. (especially if i can get my 2GGTE kit...... )
cheers for asking hope all is going nicely with your machine, from the posts ive read it all seems positive, ill have to get your brake conversion diagrams too when i get back if thats cool.
