4AGTE Turbo Manifold

I have searched the forums extensively (2 days of full reading topics) and have compiled 15 pages of information just from this forum alone so before you tell me to do a search please take this into account.
I am currently designing a turbo manifold for a 4agte
My question is:
Has anyone had any experience with both High and Low Mounting?
I am contemplating which method to use at the moment. Weight will not be too much of a factor as I am using steam pipe. I was just interested to hear people's opinions on the two. (preferably first hand experience)
Is there any advantages of high/low mounting etc etc. The turbo I will be using isn't that large GT2871r(Garrett GT28 Disco Potato).
Please only post constructive information.
Thank you
James

If the runner design/placement was the same for both the high and low mount positions, then flow/performance difference would be negligible.
However: High mount will keep more heat near the bonnet (maybe bad for nice paint jobs) and make the dump pipe more difficult to make with tighter bends, but will ensure a good downhill angle for the oil drain back to the sump.
I think you need to make your decision based on the best fit to make your intake & dump pipes run with the least bends.
Are you building front or rear wheel drive?
Cheers
Phil

Rear wheel drive.
And im not asking in terms of a performance view point, more ease of installation and positioning of oil drains/lines and water lines etc.
If it doesnt really make a difference I might go low mount because I think it leaves the engine bay looking tidier and more inconspicuous to prying eyes
*Didn't really think of the dump angle though so thanks for pointing that out. Another consideration

I agree with Phil - generally speaking performance difference is negligible. Each construction has advantages/disadvantages (generally to do with manufacture).
I like to mount turbos lower (it is however more difficult), this comes with its own set of disadvantages, like space - getting the turbo to clear engine mounts etc while maintaining nice plumbing angles, it is also more difficult to get the comp housing to clear the runners.
Weight is an issue and I recommend using bracing to help keep the manifold in one piece (steam pipe frets and beomes brittle with use).

My mate is currently getting his manifold re-made because the turbo was low mounted and the oil wasn't draining properly causing a very smoky exhaust.
Talk about a very annoying and expensive excersize

would you have troubles with air locks in the cooling lines etc if the turbo is mounted to high?
oil filter would probably be a concern if u are going to mount it low....

Well I have been talking to my engineer all night and we have decided to go with a low mount setup to allow for an easier bend on the dump pipe and better flow for the oil/water lines. As for the oil return line, he isn't too concerned with it as the design/turbo we have chosen allows the return to follow a fairly nice angle back to the sump.
Thanks for all the help guys.

read "maximum boost" by corky bell,
i have always wanted to do a side mount turbo manifold, but i think too much crap is in the way to have nice gentle bends.

high or low mount make no diffrence at all! is a japanese selling ploy! the only way a high mount is better if the intake from the turbo sticks out the bonnet so you get cold air and that is it! the very low mounts like indy ect nead to have a sump on the bottom of the turbo and and oil pump to return the oil but they do this because an indy car is low and hence to fit the turbos they are resticted by space. it has alway made me laugh at high and low mount! i keep expecting my wife to be sitting on the floor of the bathroom saying gee the hairdry works better down here! unless you have a water wheel running your engine the air is being pushed out it dosnt run out, so downhill or up hill doesnt make any diffrence. let me guess its all to do with hot air rising!lol
Jimmeh just put it where it fits best and make the runners the same length and end with a nice plenem box at the end at it will work fine. you a bit restricted using steam pipe{you cant get the same shape into the plenum without a huge amount of work) but its cheap and easy to work with so use it for your first go at it! then use stainless when you want to make another.

The thing about 'high mount' is that on some cars, e.g. Skylines, you're limited to the size of turbo you can fit in the standard 'low' position without hitting the tower - moving it up allows more space and bigger turbos. Oh, and puts them up where people can see them
