i like total tools in moorebank. good range of bits.
umm, Gasweld also? (i think thats it..)

i actually got my sidchrome socket set from a tool auction for about half retail.

for ring spanners i like my Repco (yes, Repco!) ones. they have a smoother finish than others and cause less hand pain Wink i only broke one of the 19mm spanner open end bits after hitting it with a sledgehammer at full swing (don't ask)

screwdrivers, stanley is ok, but there are some nice German ones with black rubberised handles (can't remember name). get whatever is comfortable in your hand, and has the size/length options you want.

i also like using screwdriver 'bits' with sidchrome 1/4" drive and extensions..

oh yeah, for sockets, get 1/2" drive, and same goes for torque wrench. and while you are at it, get a 1 foot extension bar for sockets... amazingly handy!!

could also try ebay possibly, but i'd stick with a good store for the warranty.

mmm tool shopping Smile
have fun,
Stewart

i agree with oldcorrolas, never go smaller than 1/2 inch, any socket under 10mm you can undo with your fingers anyway Very Happy

i bought a "superpro" socket set from bunnings, it was around 130 bucks, very capable, my only complaing is that the ratchet handle is starting to lock up when the switch isnt in exactly the right spot, dunno if this is common.

it came with AF sockets too, which i dont need, but who cares. also came with breaker bar, foot long extension, short extension, really short extension, ratched, two plug spanners, uni drive etc.

spanners, i just buy the cheap sets from bunnings, then heaps of 10mm, 12mm or whatever for a dollar each, you will break a 10mm bolt before you break a 10mm spanner, most of the time you can get a socket onto a big bolt.

as for screwdrivers, i would recommend the ones with the rubber handles, as they stick to your skin really well and you can get heaps more grip. i hate using the ones with smooth plastic handles. i dont have a screwdriver set, just one good phillips and a shitty clathead that i lost. a set should be pretty cheap VS buying individually

as far as buying individual sockets go (you know, like that weird 33mm one you need Confused ) ive actually found "Supercheap Gold" series bits to be quite good, and reasonably priced.

other than that, im a fan of sidchrome spanners and 1/2" drivers, metrinch spanners, and almost anything out of chermany

If your getting sockets for home use then you shoudl'nt pay a lot. Sidcrome are pretty expensive. Snap-on and bluepoint are the top of the pile. You should get a cheap set form Bunnings or Supercheap and replace the ratchet with a quality item when it goes. I use Teng, their pretty good and dont cost the world.

1/2in drive is for lug nuts, the bolts on either end of the crank, the pinion nut and working on tractors/farm equipment. it is large, bulky, clumsy & expensive, and you will break things.

use 1/4 & 3/8in for everything, with a 1/2 breaker bar and a few sockets for the big stuff & a 1/2 torque wrench for tightening critical stuff. the cam covers & oil pan are not critical stuff.

FYI the supercheao gold series (and supercheap) are made by Kinchrome. I haven't had any issues with the Gold spanners

from a person that sells a few of these brands

We stock stanley , Sidchrome, kinchrome, supatool, Chrometech , and some other variants

Old Sidchrome os good - if you have it KEEP IT!!!! Serious GOLD value in old sidchrome tools - new Sidchrome is no better than Kinchrome - and no where near as good as the old stuff

I actually prefer kinchrome - i buy these ( get em cheap - we love our kinchrome rep ). I find them sturdy enough so far for my home mechanicing

Stanley - Well - they are an ok Middle range one - but nothing special - compare it to Kinchromes lesser brand ( Supatool ).

They are also a bit iffy on their returns policy ( we can tell if you abuse your tools )

Chrometeck is Kinchromes ultra mega cheapy brand - havent seen much ot his - we have enough Cheap crap to sell tool morons to stock it.

Ive had experience with metwrench - their spanners were good - Though they can be MEGA frustrating in some situations .. Id prefer a good set of open end/wring spanners from kinchrome to them - more practical for 95% of jobs..

metrinch is a lifesaver when working on some systems with metric, AF and whitworth bolts\nuts all on one unit :S
i'm trying to find a small set myself

shinybluesteel: i disagree that anything under 10mm can be undone with fingers, then again i'm like Bugman and work in the A\C and refrigeration industry so i might come across well stuck(due to corrosion) tiny nuts\bolts more often than your home mechanic\handy man Smile

Ed: do you know if Supercheap Gold make 44.5mm?(1 3\4 inch) sockets? got a bit of a stubborn bolt that the shifters seem to only want to round off...i hate shifters. Worst tool ever...

As to what i prefer, i quite like Kinchrome or Sidchrome, i've found both to be good, but as Classique71 said...its not as good as the old shit
With screwdrivers, Stanley make quite nice ones that are reasonable priced(10pc set for $30 or so, they even come with nice comfy grips...not that hard plastic crap Razz) and they suit me fine for abusing stuff Wink(i also quite like my Witte screwies...but i dont think you want to pay $60 for 6 insulated screwdrivers)

im shocking with tools, loosing em all the time, people knocking em off etc..

So i buy cheap as i need it Smile that way when i loose it i dont loose much, i just keep my out for the dirt cheap tools Smile

When i move outa home ill buy my self some good stuff, but for now its supercheap, bunnings and the local crap tool clearance center Wink

I have a supa tool set which is pretty good, only thing is the ratchets will fail after a while, as all cheap ones do. My uncle has a KC pro am or something socket set and i really like it, i dont know but i think it may have something to do with kingchrome..

Rule 1: Use the right tool for the job.

hehehe... if a shifter isnt a tool, i guess that i shouldnt admit to undoing the annoying 10mm fittings on the flared ends of my soild brake lines with a whopping great 14" adjustable pipe wrench Rolling Eyes

id already broken my 10mm spit ring spanner, and rounded the corners even with my 10mm metrinch...

bloody brakes

anyway, yeah, im going to SC tomorrow, will look for said 44.5mm socket Smile

Ed, use a set of multigrips on the ones that won't budge, guaranteed every time and you won't round the nut face!!!

I'm fortunate enough to be old enough to have bought old Sidchrome, and have never had a problem with it!!! I also like Teng, but finding an agent in Perth is a bit hard these days, hence my dilema mentioned earlier!

What little Snap on/Blue Point I have is cherished but will never be bought or replaced again.

I like Metrinch for it's versatility and the fact that they grip on the flanks and not the points BUT they are not very good in tight confines (say like the engine bay in a Jap car).

Stahlwille offers lifetime replacement and is considered = best along with snap on.

Sidchrome proto is good - this is what I use and also Kinchrome.

For screw drivers I like Kinchrome the best (kinchrome torquemaster or some such name).

and the odd socket you need for the gbox sump.

note to above mentions: adjustable spanner is NOT a tool, and will NOT get off a gbox sump plug. Neither will a 20 year old pipe wrench, or a pair of multi-grips.

NBB: gbox oil smells like baby poo mixed with dog shit mixed with engine oil.

and 1/2" drive is priceless. 3/8 is too middle ground for my liking. I use my 1/4 for the fiddly stuff, 1/2 for anything else. and cheap toold suck, I've rounded my 10mm socket piece Sad

at my work we got everything, snap on to cheap kinchrome. snap on is good as is old sidchrome (my entire toolkit at home is sidchrome).
this is what i would buy if i wanted a quality home starter set, all have lifetime warranty.

- sidchrome socket sets (cause every markets have them for CHEAP and they are good)
- KC pro am spanners (cheap, bulkier than snap on but almost as strong
- sidcrhome pliers (quality is EXCELENT in their pliers.
- kinchrome screwdrivers cause they are good quality, and you only want cheap cause you lose them anyway.

NEVER BUY - sidchrome pipe spanners or KC pro am pliers of any description

I dont consider pipe spanners\wrench(or stillsons) a shifter...even though they do shift Razz I find them more reliable.

For any pipe working tools, you cant go past Rigid or Rothenburger(spelling?)

oldcorollas: the brand u are thinking of is either stahlwille or Hazet - both very good quality and very expensive.

for best value u cant go past kinchrome.

im an apprentice mechanic (so my tools are in constant use) and my kinchrome soft grip screwdrivers are hard to beat. (german made too)

Snap on are the best quality but come at a hefty price.

a brand i found good value too is from the U.S. called Craftsman its sold thru Sears in the U.S. (like K-Mart or Big W) but sold thru one shop in NSW - USA Toolworks. but they r really good for the money. they look kinda cheap and dodgy but i havent had a problem with them yet. plus they come with a lifetime warranty!

im surprised no one has mentioned ratchet spanners yet! These are the best tools evah! Ive got a set of JIMY Ratchets, they seem pretty good so far, Your not suppose to use them for major tightening or undoing but they are great for everything else!

Ive got a full Repco 1/2 inch drive set, bought it 2 years ago and it gets used every day basically. I lost my 10mm one and had to buy another one, and the ratchet is showing signs of locking up every now and then.

however i have been known to use a hammer on my ratchet...

as for screwdrivers ive got a set of stanleys and some JIMY's, a mix and match of stuff

got a Sidchrome socket set also thats in the smaller drive, great for hoseclamps, brake line bleeders, and odd sizes of small nuts etc and screws wqith hex heads.

im looking at buying a set of normal spanners with the large bend in them, double ring spanners. Proly end up getting some kingchrome ones.

as a mechanic, snap on is most of what i own.

admittedly, i do own a fair bit of repco stuff as well, but snap on is worth the money you pay for it.

others may have lifetime warranty, but that's because they need it. i've lost count the amount of repco ratchets i've taken back to get fixed, or replaced. haven't had to do that once with my snap on ones Rolling Eyes

i dont use them every day, but regularly, and i havent had one problem with them.
