Spring on Timing Belt Tensioner (4A)

Anyone know if its really needed? I am guessing it serves as an aid to tensioning the timing belt. But if you can do this by hand then the bolt takes over the job of holding tension, and its not really needed.
Possibly also a safety device.
Anyone want to give me a definitive response?

leave it there, you're certainly not going to gain anything taking it off...and i doubt toyota would put it there if it wasnt really needed.
Im pretty sure its there as a safety device also

the spring is in place to give you the correct tension upon the belt before you fix the pully tight, as above poster said, just leave it there!!

Mmm, doesnt help when the end of the spring snaps when you are tensioning it.
I nicked one off my race engine, so ill be able to replace it later.

you dont need it if you know how to tension it manually. its often removed on race/rally engines. only for the fact that its one less thing to break/get in the way.

Yeah, thats what i thought. But since this is my daily driver and its a bitch to get to, its nice to have a bit of safety.
The one i replaced it with was brand new, and i probably wont run one on my race engine... maybe.
