icon4.gif  How do you secure an engine to a pallette??? Fri, 20 August 2004 13:04 Go to next message
Hi all.

How do you go about securing an engine to a pallette for shipping? What's the best way/what is commonly used? Big bits of wire to lash it down, looped through available bolt holes???

thanks,
Stefan

That's how mine came from Sydney-Perth. A whole bunch of ropes, fencing wire,... and then wrapped up with that super glad wrap stuff they put around pallets.

Peter

Yep, I use fencing wire, front and back. I use holes such as those for bellhousing bolts to feed the wire through then tie if by twitching it by hand. To tighten the wire ties, I then use a steel bar and twist the wire against itself. This process I've used religously, and have never had a problem. This process also stops damaging bits and pieces, from the wires and rubbing while in transit.

Yeah. Same method as CLG. Plus two main stays to the engine hooks so the pallet isnt just secured onto the block when you go to lift it.
Gladwrap is good too.

Thanks all

In your opinions - is a pallette adequete for shipping interstate, or is a crate a better option for long long distances? Do you normally bother with insurance?

Pallet worked fine for me (Syd -> Perth).
I insured it separately (the freight companies DON'T really want to insure it, and would only cough up if they ran over it with a fork lift or similar). Note that if anything goes missing during the journey (ie someone nicks it) the freight company insurance will NOT cover it.
I ended up contacting an insurance broker and it was classed as 'Marine Cargo Insurance' (even though it went by truck). This covered me for any loss or damage during the transit.

Regards

Peter

May I ask roughly how much it cost to insure? Was it much of a hassle?

$300 to insure for up to $7k (there was more than just an engine).
No real hassle, just looked up Insurance Brokers & phoned a few.
