1st Gen Round headlights standard was 165/75?SR 14..Pathetic..
Then Toyota had a quick sanity attack and went to 175/70SR/14 and later in the 2nd Gen(Rectangular headlights)it was 185/70HR/14..I think you can go to 195 on standard rims..you need to ask at a tyre service to confirm that.
This was in Australia..
In the UK they had 155/13"/5" rims (and a 1600 engine) in the first instance on the ST Coupe, the ST had 165SR14, the GT and XT
had 185/70HR/14"...
I have 205/60/14 on 6 inch rims...a nice balanced combination...I have some 7" rims but just a bit wide on the front (but that may because of the massive offset on those particular rims (old Cheviot Turbos)..I was told yesterday they were originally designed for use on 4 stud Fords)..
Cheers..

Thanks Greg,
coz the RA40 i just put a deposit on (series 2) is fitted with 175/65R14's and it looked really small and the speedo is out 10%. now i know what size to put on. im thinking about getting a set of RA60 alloys to stick on the car. what width are the RA60 stock alloys?

I am just guessing...and the guess is 5.5inches...which is not a lot of bang for your buck...is your new car a Coupe or a Lift back.?..Colour/Interior/auto or manual..?

from recollection ... the legal limit of tyre width on RA40 is a 195
i have 195/65R14 on mine - any wider and you would probably want powersteer.
i reckon ma61 rims look better that RA60, they're also slightly wider (can squeeze 235 onto ma61 rim).

The original tyres on my RA40 when I got it were Pirilli 185's on the standard steel rims (I gave them away as "stand around project rims "-I think eviljack has them now ...any way they were a bit "hard/heavy " in the steering department but the 6" rims with the 205 rubber seemed "lighter" when I fitted them...

I should say the rims I fitted do not have a big offset and the track is right on the max 1" extra overall legally allowable in NSW (without engineering)..but hey who seems to take any notice if it???...until you get defected..

""can squeeze 235 onto ma61 rim"""
Those 235's are big baggy mothers...I have some on some 7' rims...they are huge on a 14"
I put some preloved Kumho 225's on 7" rims on my MX32 yesterday and they would ne the answer IF I had any traction issues...which I don't cause its stock as a rock

|
use any fuel you like - toyota heads have been able to digest ULP or PULP or LRP since the 18R and earlier...
using fuel additives in an 18R will only assist you in lightening your wallet.
there's a few old threads on this very topic .. search will help you out here

195/60R14 is the way to go on an RA40, that and refill the front original oil shockers with heavyer oil.

so if i go to pick and payless and get a set of alloys from say the RA60 or any 114.3 PCD car u guys reckon i should go for 195/65R14 or get say Cressida (heaps of those rims floating round at picko) or TM/TN Magna Elite 15" rims and fit 195/60's on those.
anyone know if the tm/TN magnas are 114.3mm PCD? or what other cars i could get them off

I don't think the standard MX73 Cressi rims will really suit...they should fit I think but bugger all offset...you also might have some issues with the very thick centre on the mx73's for a start..my personal choice would be some of those early Supra rims..but I think they are 7" and you don't want that...and they are getting hard to find...there are a couple of RA40's at the $2 shop at the moment and there may be something suitable just laying around...I know 'bishi Scorpion rims fit 'cause thats what my Cheviots came off and there are quite a few Magna's and a couple of Scorpions out there as well..I have never really had a look..I thought the later Magnas were 5 stud?..I will be there next Saturday..(might be a MX32 from Fowles arriving and I want something off it..)
PS There is a RA40 Coupe in the holding yard behind the office with an 18R-G..has wide wheels on it but could not see what...also there is a newly arrived hatch like yours is blue/grey with a perfect dash pad and just about everyting else in great condition..I got the bonnet badge of it..perfect...the only one I have ever seen with the blue "cover" for the dragon still intact..

There goes that idea.

I'll look into Sigma/Scorpion and early magna wheels.
Quote: | I thought the later Magnas were 5 stud?..
|
The 1991-current model are all 5 stud but the early TM-TP models are 5 stud and i noticed that the Elite model has 15" wheels with 195/60R15 tyres.
