18rg Twin Solex - Quick carb question? Sun, 22 August 2004 06:01 Go to next message
Haven't worked on these carbies before. Could anyone tell me what the highlighted part of the carby is, it seems to be just swinging around doing very little? What effect does this have on the functioning of the carby?
Its an 18rgu, obviously converted back to carb's. In an ra28.
Thanks.

I am fairly sure it is something you don't need. I think you will find there is a bi-metalic valve in there? Carbys on 4K engines have a similar thing, a hot air valve? When the bi-metalic valve gets warm, it opens up and extra air in the inlet manifold. A cold engine needs to run rich, a hot engine can run leaner, so maybe this valve is used to keep the mixtures more on edge, and in the end better emissions and ecconomy. Thats my guess anyway. You may get better ecconomy by hooking it up, provided the engine still runs well. It should be a single vacuum hose from it, to the ballance tube.

Also, these are the late model carbs. So the engine is probably a 18R-GU like you say, and it always had carbs all along. 18RGEU is EFI. It will say either way on the sticker on the front of the motor.

Yeah, it is an 18rgu. What you suggested may make sense, i have noticed that the engine is running excessively rich. Will have a play around soon. From memory, i dont think there was a vacumn line into the unit, it sort of just sits there and swivels?
Thanks for the thoughts.

Hi,

Geez, they look totally different from the Solex carbs on my 18RG. So, Toyota changed the carbs with each variant of the 18RG?

Hi, this thing looks familiar.

We've pulled one of these apart before and yes, they are a bimetallic air bleed valve.
They work just as described by Jonny.

These carbies should always be tuned (idle) when they are hot, hence, when this valve is operational (if it is linked up)

There are problems associated with these things though.

1. They allow unfiltered air to enter the engine (small particles are likely to enter)

2. They don't always work. The one that we had (before we modified it) didn't shut off when the engine was cold.

Implications: if tuned when hot (valve open), the engine runs like shit when the engine is cold (faulty valve is still open)

What we did:
We sourced a set of the older style carbies, soldered this valve shut and used it as a vacuum plug so that all vacuum points on the balance tube looked original to get the conversion past motor reg.

Suggestions:
1. Test it to make sure it works.

2. If it works, then set it up with its vacuum line so that it is operational, then retune the engine while it is hot.
THis may fix some richness probles during driving.

Also put a piece of filtering foam in it somehow so that shit doesn't get into the engine through the hole in the top.

It may help als oto screw it into its mounting so that it doesn't swing around, and gasket goo the bugger in, ours is always coming loose.

Good info Jonny/Steve.

I've got this thing on a set of carburettors (early style Solexes though with the seperate fuel bowl covers) and I was wondering what it was for.

I'll get it looked at when I get the car registered.
