can the 'G' handle it?? Sun, 22 August 2004 10:08 Go to next message
i'm gonna track down a diff for my mx22. a couple of the other mark 2 maniacs here have done a diff change, so input from you's would be greatly appreciated. is a G diff from the hilux up to the job, that is, to cope with a 1UZ? it's not gonna be a fully trciked up engine, just an exhaust, and from what i've gathered, a better inlet manifold would be worthwhile too. what model hilux do i need to rape to get the right diff??

The F diff you have already is more than up to the task.

Any model except RN2x. RN41 are very common at wreckers.

You should be able to track down an F series Diff for it and bolt it straight in. have a look arounf for F series rear ends first, may save you some heartache.

it's got an e diff, and one of the axles is hell bent. i could easily get an f diff but from what you guys have been saying, i'd much rather a g diff, with an lsd, and easier to get gears and stuff. what ratios can i get them from a wrecker if i get a rn41? how tall can i get a gear set for one? 3.5:1?

RN41 won't have an LSD in it (or very very unlikely anyway). Whether you get an F diff or a G diff, you'll have to swap in an LSD centre. So where's the advantage in a G diff? You'll need to modify the suspension mounting points, the tailshaft, and re-drill the axles to 4-stud ($$$), whereas the F diff will just bolt in.

If you want 3.5:1, a manual RA65 has an F diff with that ratio. That's what I'm using in my MA61 right now.

i'm gonna get an lsd either way. i want 5 stud, fuckin impossible to get the wheels you want with an obsolete stud pattern. this has probly been asked already, what hubs can i use for the front, and brake upgradability, for 5 stud, preferably the same as a hilux?

Ah joe, do a search. Rolling Eyes

Here are the answers, but ONLY because you drive a Mk2.

Get an RN41 diff (all the RN41s I have seen seem to have 4.375:1 single spinners). Get a G series LSD. Buy some 3.5:1 gears (unlikely you will find these secondhand so new from Motive Gears is your most likely option). Put it all together.

For the fronts, use Crown MS65 hubs.

And FFS read that article I wrote.

Just get a Hilux LSD and get it shimmed up.

Remember the diff doesn't have to be an RN41. It just has to be a Hilux rear diff that is 1410mm across. If you happen to find one that is LSD and well priced grab it. The only reason I generally suggest an RN41 is because thay are pretty easy to find at pull your own style wreckers which generally are quite cheap (I got mine for $75 with axles but without centre). Another $350 for a limo and I was set.

In your pricing, remember to add the cost of getting the suspension points welded on to the Hilux diff. That means you'll have to sacrifice the E series diff to get those points.

i had a look around, only thing available is an rn46(4wd) diff, i dunno if that's usable, either way i'm not touching it for $550!!!!! Twisted Evil it looks like i'm going with what norbie suggested. will an axle from an f diff fit in the e diff? just until i get the right diff.

Just use the E series diff till it blows up. In the meantime search for bargains.
