freaken adjustable clutch rod, MAD fix Sun, 22 August 2004 12:34 Go to next message
driving home from work today and literally 3kms from home im changing from 2nd to 3rd and all i feel is the clutch go from nice to empty Shocked

roll over to the side of the road and there i am thinking iv either busted the slave or master cylinders. pop open the bonnet and what do i see? the freaken adjustable clutch rod snapped in half. im like WTF!!! HOW???

anyway as i do iv got a mechanic shop in my boot, so i get the tools out to try and fix and what do you know? i got nothing to replace whats there. a million bolts and nuts and nothing fits Crying or Very Sad

anyway so im fiddling round with spanners and i got a 8/10mm open end which looked the part but no it was too long and couldnt get it to work. also was too big to fit in slave.

so i get NRMA to tow home as no one home to pick me up. when i get home obviously i need to fix it so i can get to work tomorrow. so here i am going through every bolt/rod/piece of metal i got and nothing would work.

then i remembered that i need something adjustable and strong and what do i see in front of me? the rear brake drum pad adjuster Laughing so i measure it up and its a bit long and doesnt fit in the slave cylinder WHY GOD WHY????????????. BUT thats where mister grinder came in, i cut the fork end off completely and rounded the end and walah engineering at its finest Laughing

put it in and was a bit short (was adjusted all the way in) so i make it longer get it perfect. but now i got the issue of it possibly rolling back in and coming out. so i go through my crap again and find the perfect bolt that screws on perfect and is the exact thickness required for the adjustment.

so here i am with my new adjustable clutch rod invention and wondering if it works. i take the car for a spin round the area and works like a treat. then i think well i need to try long distance and since i was taking my sis to the movies what a perfect op to test it.

well im home now typing this so you guys can imagine how it went Very Happy IM A VERY HAPPY CHAPPY NOW... now being twice as thick as the original adjusting rod i dont believe i should have a clutch problem for a while hopefully BUT further testing required before commercial release Laughing Laughing

PS will try and get pics mid week on my days off to show the fine engineering work

My only input is I can't believe you called the NRMA while 3km from home. I drove a clapped out Pulsar home from Shepparton with no clutch cable once....

I had the plastic cable-adjuster shatter on my old commodes thrice (!). Once in the VC, twice in the VH!! Two of those times I just drove the bastard home, avoiding stops like the plague. If you've gotta make a start - just turn it off, stop, put it in gear and cringe while the starter motor roll-starts the whole car Nope

As for gear-shifts? make like a truckie and match those revs, heel and toe style! Rolling

guys my cars almost dead as it is and i didnt want to do all the rolling starts and stuff... also there are a million traffic lights in those 3kms and are ALWAYS FREAKING RED...

besides i pay good money for roadside so i use them for anything to get my monies worth Laughing

anyway drove to work today and she seems very sweet so its all looking good... therefore if you need a new adjustable clutch rod, then dont go oast the drum brake pad adjuster

but the real question is how long did the nrma take to get there? when i blew up my gearbox they got a towie to tow me to 'safetey' (in other words from the side of a busy road to a side street) then they got a roadside assistence guy to come out and tell me my gearbox has shit itself (duh) he didn't even look at the car. all he did was ask me whats wrong. then they got ANOTHER towie to get me back home! and each time i had to wait for someone it took like 45mins!
