Hi all, just wondering if someone knows about customs fees on import car parts.
I got some wheels from Japan (secondhand). They were 12,000yen. So around $150.
Now I got a $60 fee to pay to customs! That is 40% of the purchase price. I reckon that is a total joke! How can they charge that much.
I talked to customs and they just give you all these figures and crap and seem reluctant to explain it.
All I could gather was car parts, secondhand are 15%, then 10% gst. So I dont know how they got the 40%. They reckon sometimes they will charge an extra fee on the postage cost.
Man they hit you for every cent..
Anyway, anyone have some extra info they could shed so I can see if i'm being ripped off or not.
Thanks
Joel

Customs would not collect duty and/or GST where:
the value of the goods does not exceed $1000 for goods imported by post or $250 for goods imported air/sea cargo, other than by post; and
the Customs duty and/or GST liability of the goods does not exceed $50.

Customs charge "market value" (they have a red book) plus postage, if you're unlucky. If you're lucky they'll just go by the price quoted on the sticker plus postage. Either way, the only stuff you can really get in under the radar are small/light things... for cars i guess that'd be boost controllers and ECUs and the like. It sucks, but that's life with protectionist trade policies...
