wow! that looks seriously bad. i've never seen anything close to looking that rough & nasty on a valve face.
any chance these valves are counterfit/cheap knockoffs?
i am surprised that it isn't burned from getting towards zero lash.

jeez - the wear face of that is badly mashed up... contributor to your low compression issues?

i still can't imagine why it looks like that, when it should be a smooth surface from the valve hitting the seat. yours looks like wear from being rotated. plus all those loose bits.
i think i could only re-create that using an electric drill chucked to the valve stem.
just curious!

I had the same problem with my 18RGU. Original valves with no margin left on the valve. Had the valve clearances reset but 6 months later no valve clearance and no compression.
Had to rebuild the head and replace all the valves and seats. The valves were very hard to find but finally found after a tip from someone on this site!

I imagine if you didn't upgrace the valve springs and drove it like those cams would require, this problem may become more likely.
If you hit valve bounce regularly, then this could happen, otherwise it could be due to the cam profile/timing.
Those are my guesses.
On another topic, what sort of power is that engine putting out with those cams and the valve change?

apparently its an inherent problem with the stock 18RG, my dads mate had the problem back in the good old days when he used to run one in the speedway
