hello
im looking at getting a sub and amp for xmas- and was wondering some good setups... (in an ma61 supra)... and that way i don't have to cut any interior trims- i can have my 3" speakers in the front and my 5"s in the rear, covering the high-range, and the sub can cover the low range...
i think i remember seeing them set up in boxes almost flat against the back seat, and on the right wall (where the compartment is, near wiper fluid)...
you see, i'd like to keep most of my boot space (i have to carry amps, guitars and drums around sometimes)...
im only looking at a 10" sub too, because i don't really want heaps of doof. mind you, i don't really know much about amps and subs, so im open to suggestions...
anyway, some subtle, "stock looking" and inconspicous sub boxes and setups anyone? any pics?
cheers guys

Hey mate,
Currently building a box for my sub, though it's a 12".
For a 10" you could get away with a relatively small sealed enclosure, depending on the sub (say 20-25ltr box).
What type of money are we talking here?
Have you thought about upgrading your front speakers? This is the most important area in a car sound system. I was simply going to purchase the subby, but after consulting the car audio australia forums I decided to get some decent 6.5" front speakers (Boston Rally RC620 Splits).
So first off, let us know the budget for the speaker/amp purchase and have a think about whether you would upgrade the front speakers now or later.
I'll show you my system at the next meet if it's in. It's quite a mild system, but should sound quite nice.

buy my tuned, vented, enclosure with 8" REsponse driver ![Nod](images/smiley_icons/nod.gif)
probem solved!
ed_ma61 wrote on Sat, 12 October 2002 15:21 | ok, since all my stereo gear got stolen, im selling my sub box.
it is totally custom designed and manufactured by moi, and i mean real audio enginnering ![Smile](images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif)
its running an 120wrms 8" driver (jacar response):: the enclosure is designed specifically around this driver, and wont work as well with something else. and to be honest, the response driver had the best specs of all the 8" drivers available in that rms range anyway... so why bother. the box is a single driver ported enclosure, with a single tuned length port for about 80Hz. effective range of the box is about 40-120Hz with VERY DECENT gain. the enclosure was designed taking into acoount the volume of the rear of the ma6x ra6x hatch elclosure (does pick up 20Hz tones), etc etc and produces awesome sound for a single 8"...
the shape is specifically fitted to sit snugly between the shock towers and the rear seats, and fits in perfectly (doesnt move at all)
if youre after bass to scare the neighbours, this AINT for you, and i wont sell it to you ![Smile](images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif)
it IS for someone who wants hight quality bass to build a part of an excellent rear sound stage. it will vibrate your heart, and shake your kidneys, giving you goose bumps, if you want it too, but that wasnt exactly the idea when i built it...
used for 2months, NEVER overdriven or clipped- 8" response driver included...

hell, if you buy it off me for the cost of fuel and back to ballarat, ill deliver it free... (basically gets me a free trip to melb!
cheers

hmmm thanks guys-
ed! thats what im looking for! mind you, it is a christmas present, so ill talk to parents when they get home from work- if they refuse then maybe i can just lend the money (i only have about $100 to my name atm) but an 8" sub sounds good... exactly what i want ![Smile](images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif)
i can't see the pics, but it sounds about what i want, fitting between the rear strut towers, are there any others?
i will need an amp yeah? any recommendations? this may be a stupid question, but can you move the sub box if need be?
and how much does petrol cost to melb? i'd nearly pay that to just see your car
but, ill keep you posted.... (and no, they aren't famous last words )
cheers mate

Ed, can you post approx dimensions of your sub box? Any idea what it weighs? I'm flying back to Brissy on Friday... I wonder if I can take it with me as carry-on luggage?

Yes it is.
And if you are purchasing an amp just for the sub, go for a monoblock or a good 2 channel that can be bridged to one channel.
If you are thinking about upgrading your front speakers at some point in the future, you may wish to get a good 4 channel that can run your front speakers from 2 channels and bridge the other 2 for the woofer.
An amp that has full range crossovers is quite nice to have, rather than a simple low, medium, high type of crossover.

groovy...
i am planning on upgrading the front speakers to some decent 4", and perhaps some 5x7" in the rears- should i get a 6 channel (4 channels + amp?)
and after re-reading ed's post, i realise the price for the box and sub is the cost of petrol- how much does melbourne to sydney and back cost??
ed, you can PM me or reply here, whatever you prefer

I almost bought a Type-S dual 2ohm 12" sub. Opted for the Eclipse SW6123.4 which sounded a little better to my fat ears
