7mge cylinder head Mon, 23 August 2004 12:21 Go to next message
Hi guys,
got a 7mge jap import motor for my supra. I compression tested it before I bought it, but it still burns oil(valve seals?) and there is a lot of tappet noise(?). The engine came with a 6 month replacement warranty. So I have two choses:
1.having another engine fitted, which will cost me more than I paid for it. And as I can't test the engine, it's another lottery.
2.the engine importers have offered to pay for repairs not exceeding the $600 I payed for the engine. So I was thinking I could pay the difference, and get the head repaired.
My mechanic said that if you recondition the head on a 100K+ engine, the increased pressure could damage the old rings. So I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

He means that by getting a perfect sealing head, it will show up signs of a worn bottom end.

It happened in my 6mge.

Car was running fine with no smoke, valve stem seals went (virtually overnight, it was wierd), rebuilt the head, and then realised that the rings had gone too, but with a dodgy head like it was before, you couldn't recognise any symptons of worn rings.

I say rebuild the head, and if the rings are gone, rebuild the bottom end.
ACL do most, if not all of the 7mge parts, so its pretty cheap.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know a ball park figure for a head rebuild? I didn't plan to keep this car, but didn't want to sell a lemon. But the repair costs have gone through the roof. I was thinking as its tappet noise, maybe the head doesn't need to be removed, just the cam covers?!?...give me some hope!!

Can vary, but if you are doing it just to sell it, you could probably get away for under $500

Unless you know someone who can change valve stem seals without taking the head off, then its heaps cheaper.

Take it somewhere else, get a 2nd opinion, make sure you know th problem before you try and fix it
