700rpm is the factory idle at normal engine operating temp. Nothing to worry about.

mine generally does a weird bouncy idle when cold and idles at 1.1k and drops down over about 30 seconds to 700

Adi, mate check the electrical connections at the front of the engine, one of them is a temp sender, which controls the cold start functions of the ECU.

Yes - as Sideshow says it could be your ISCV.
Immediately after switching off the engine you should hear a ticking sound for a few seconds (have to listen with the bonnet up). This is the ISCV opening up for the next cold start. If you don't hear anything it may be jammed.

okay cheers peter.. i'll give it a listen.
Is the ISCV easy to replace? A simple in out job? Also, do i need to replace it or just clean it?
cheers

Yes - it is easy to replace although I haven't heard of anyone replacing them, just freeing them up.
Two nuts, an air hose & a small water hose in/out and it's off.

clean the idle motor
then this is how u reset the idle
this is for a 7m but i pressume same for 1j
run engine at 1500 revs for 5 mins
supposedly this makes the idle motor wind out and in to find its limits
do this after cleanin see if it makes a difference
