1JZ Thermostat Opening Temperature? Tue, 24 August 2004 05:25 Go to next message
Anyone know what the stock thermostat (90916-03093) opens at?
The local Toyota mob reckon 82 - 95 degrees - that seems too wide a range to me.
The TRD website (http://toyota-trd.jp/en/strt/thrmstut.html) sells 'sports' ones that open at 71 degrees - that seems too low.

Thanks

Peter

around 82-85" would be right. i dunno what toyota spec as the opening temp, but 82 is what my 7m opens at, doubt the 1jz would be "much" more than that.

I tested mine out on the weekend while swapping engines just to make sure it was working. Unfortunately no thermometer available Sad

slightly OT: how does the thermostat know what temprature it is?

Bi-metal strip actually. Two different types of metal with different thermal expansion properties are bonded together; as they heat up, one expands more than the other, so the strip bends. This is what opens the thermostat valve.

Theres a bit of debate out there on this one. My 1JZ sits on 90-92 degrees, so it may begin opening a little before this.

My VVTi 1JZ-GTE uses an 82 Deg C thermostat. My in radiator thermo switch turns the fans on at 85 Deg, and shuts em down at 82 Deg.

regards Chuck.

Ok - looks like the consensus is at least 82 degrees.

Now I realise why my bottom radiator hose was stone cold after a 10 minute warm-up. The engine was only up to about 75 degrees and hence the thermostat was still shut. Looks like I'll have to wait a little longer.

Thanks

Peter
