21R-C Wakeup :) Thu, 23 May 2002 04:22 Go to next message
Okay, not a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination, but none the less, it IS my daily driver.
Going to be dynoed in about a month, and I want it to crack 60rwhp (~45rwkW) hopefully Smile Pathetic I know, but remember, stock these had 90hp (67kW) at the fly!

Got a list of things I can do fairly cheap:
-Advance timing (Designed to cope with 89RON fuel, only gets BP Ultimate)
-K&N Replacement filter
-New spark plugs (colder? any recommendations?)
-Replace leaky front muffler with straight pipe

Can any one add to this with any fairly cheap simple ideas to eke another kW or so out of the thing? Thanks.

I have a friend at work with an RA60 coupe who asked me a similar thing the other day.. what are some cheap mods that can be done to squeeze a bit more from his 21RC. He doesnt want to go to the trouble and expense of a 1G swap or anything like that, and doesnt expect it to go like one either Smile It's just his daily driver.

So I'd be interested in hearing about this also, and I'll pass on the comments to him.

One thing that could help a lot is to pull all the "C" emssions stuff off.
I know it helps with 18R's, so i imagine it would also have to help a bit with 21R's.

Is it a legal requirement to have all that stuff on?

I thought about either getting one of the drop-in replacements or one of the ones with the silver-chrome top on them.
I mean, if a cop pulled me over and I had one of those, is he likely to say anything about it?
Doesn't matter, I''d just keep the stock stuff in case I ever had to reconnect it.
Can anyone tell me what exactly I can and cant take off? This sounds like a plan!

Correctly functioning emissions gear will have little or no effect on power output. For example, the EGR system is disabled at WOT. Leave it there, it exists for a reason you know.

And yes, it is illegal to modify/disable ANY emissions gear your car was originally fitted with. If you're caught (unlikely I know), the fines are truly astronomical.

Cool, thats what I thought, thats why I was going more for a drop in replacement filter.

Can you suggest anything I should add to the list?

I'll be very interested to hear how it goes.

I looking to do the same to my 21r-c. I dont want to spend much, just want it to go as fast as possible without doing any big mods, or engine swaps.

My first job was to remove the cold air intake and drill big holes in the side of the filter housing, sounds really cool now Smile Smile probly not good for it but oh well, its a 21rc for gods sake, anything that increases the smile factor is worthwile eh!

You removed the cold-air intake, and drilled big holes in the filter housing, does it drive any better?

What you do about the bit that sucks hot air from in the exhaust manifold cover, u remove that too?

You wouldn't be able to show us any pics would you?

I reconditioned the carby on my old RA60, and that made a huge difference. My accelerator pump was hardly working at all before, and it also made the car much smoother

I put a lynx adapter and a dual throat weber carby off an xe or xf falcon on mine years ago. Gave it a fair bit more top end, and was bloody cheap. Also had extractors. I had a friend with the same car and this put me fairly solidly ahead of him.

They use these in sport trucks in cali etc for years and the americans, (who also had the turbo 22rte) made a lot of carby/inlet manifolds for these and the 22r. Look in the states for good tuning on these engines. The most common build seems to be a 20r head on a 22r block.

How much did that set you back? Tuning and all?
