do you need to change crossmembers or engine mounts when transplanting a engine of the same family but different series. eg. 2S -> 3S, 3A -> 4A ?

Sometimes you do, but usually you can mix'n'match other components (eg sump, engine mounts etc) so you can leave your crossmember alone.
