Any suggestions what sorta things I should get done to the 1JZ while engine is out before putting it in my car?
Clutch, belts, injectors?
|
water pump possibly as these seem to die often. Don't know about clutch but timing belt, fan belt is a must. injectors cleaned is good idea as well. one of mine was dirty. plugs. that is all i can think of.

Also, how is the parts scene for these engines. Is the soarer and supra 1jz identical when it comes to parts? Like oil filter, ignition plugs, spark plugs?
woohoo - cant wait.

AFAIK all 1jz's use the same oil filter and plugs. people recommend NGK BKR6ES gapped to .8mm. ignition plugs? you mean coil packs? if so, I am assuming that they are all the same.
good luck

Check the p/s pump, replace idler pulley bearings, give it a good clean etc. You may want to buy new engine mounts as the round rubber mounts crack/split with age. Definately a new serpentine belt (runs p/s, air-con etc), plugs, air-filter.
Enjoy!

mine was leaking but not dead.
I was told the noise in my car could be the water pump and it was making a tapping/clunking noise but I worked out that it wasn't so...?

Thanks for the excellent replies...
Okay so far on the list:
Water pump
Idler Pulley bearings
Serpentine belt
Plugs
Air filter
Ignition leads
Clean injectors
Timing belt
Engine mounts
Hmm...this conversion seems to be getting more and more expensive. Any idea the costs of the Water pump, idler pulley bearings and timing belt?
I think timing belt will be quite a bit.
Cleaning would be wise - might be clean when I get it
Can the engine mounts be changed after? Or is there more labour involved and better to do it from the start.

Depends on your point of reference . I just bought one from Penrith Toyota, and they landed it here (out in the bush) for just over $70, which I didn't think was too bad.
They do better deals (ie trade price) if you are a Toymods club member, so I am told.
(/me wonders if I should join...)

Bearings are cheap - just press the knackered one out and take it to a bearing shop to match the size.
Engine mounts aren't necessary if yours are in OK condition - look for cracks around the round rubber base. New ones are around $250 per side from toyota, but you can get them cheaper if you sweet-talk the dealer. It's much easier to change the mounts when the engine is out of the car!
Now is a good time to change the suspension bushes, steering rack boots/mounts and get some new shocks too
FYI my conversion from 7M-GE manual to 1JZ manual cost ~$1500 on top of the cost of the halfcut. Doing 99% of the work myself.
