Josh's 7M-GTE MA61 progress. (UBER dialup warning)

Well, I'm going for my engineer's cert tomorrow (eep), so today I had a few little things tidied up - mainly around my old pod filter. Out with the yucky foam unifilter, in with the apexi pod(Unifilter pod for sale, anyone? ). I chatted with the engineer, and he said 90-95% he knocks back first time around. Pretty harsh stuff! Anyway, in aid of passing I had a nice box fabbed up around the new pod filter.
Sadly going for a chop on a stock airbox of some kind just wasn't an aption. I really did try, but there's just no room there - it sits up too high and the bonnet doesn't close. Stupid 7M and it's damn inlet manifold! If there wasn't all that intercooling piping around the pod it would be a snack. The engineer said he frowned apon chopped up stock airboxes anyway, so this was the better of 2 options.
Called up Performance Metalcraft in Rydalmere first - $580 quote (without looking at it, so I know it would've gone up even more). Thanks, NEXT. Micks Metalcraft - $400-$600, depending on inspection. NEXT! I'm getting a bit worried at this point. This is when I get tipped off to a place called "Groove Ryder Fabrications". Gave them a call - $200 bucks. SWEET!
They say a picture tells a thousand words, so here's a 12,050 word essay on what Groove Ryder Fabrications did to my baby today.
Cleared the way. Took out all the junk and made room to work. The space in the photo looks a lot bigger than it is in reality.
Cut templates out of cardboard.
Using sheet aluminium (1.3mm from memory).
Minor adjustments with file and die-grinder to make it flush.
The new pod.
The new pod and my AFM (a 1uz item). Sadly the two didn't match up. Some unexpected fabbing was needed (an extra $60).
End result of said fabbing. A very tidy little adapter.
In it all goes with nice new gasgets (I'm really starting to admire these Groove Ryder guys).
The top piece.
Mountings for the top piece.

Side piece welded on, and tested to make sure it's easy to get to the pod filter for servicing. All too easy!
The finished product, complete with grooves to stop the lid getting dented, and a slight bend to stop the bonnet catching it.
I was extremely impressed. These pics might make it look easy, but it took them the whole day to do. Full credit to the Groove Ryder guys. Very close attention to every little detail. I like people like that - I highly recommend them.
All in all, cost me $260 bucks. Drive in, drive out.
Fingers crossed for the engineer tomorrow!

P.S. A few more pics of my baby for good measure
Mmmmm... leather centre consol...

Yer, they have 2 drag cars to build, so all big jobs are on hold for a few months.
But they can do little jobs like this at a days notice - just call and book in. The big stuff there's a long wait for (like dravens intercooler piping - 2 day job!)

Looks sweet. The airbox is quite nice. And all for $260. Good deal.
Does it seal on the inner fender at all ? Can I grovel for a template as well
That is one nice shiny car, very much unlike mine
One thing though, if you have the std steering wheel, put that back on, as some don't like aftermarket ones.
How much is your engineering going to cost (mine will cost me about $1.5k ) ? Done anything on the brakes/suspension ?
Cheers

The airbox is sealed on all sides with rubber, except for a little but under the intercooler pipework which is just metal bolted down. Doesn't need to be exactly airtight down there though!
The guys at Groove Ryder have the template, so just rock up and say you have an MA61 and they'll "whip it out" for you... as such
No stock wheel unfortunately, so I just better hope it does the trick, and as for the engineering costs:
It's $400 if all goes well (yeah right)
If I'm knocked back, there is a $100 "consultation fee" <coughBULLSHITcough>. Gee, I wonder why so many people are knocked back? Then again, there are a LOT of shitters out there (What?! I never mentioned you Draven! No need to get upset!).
As far as I could tell, that was it. Seemed pretty decent to me.
My brakes are stock (but feeling very good after a freshen up), and suspension is the usual Kings/KYB combo.

Thanks Evil_Foetus... I think. I choose to take that as a compliment
And in further news:
Passed first go! The engineer was so surprised... considering 95% get knocked back first go. It made things a lot easier having a locally delivered engine (the 7MGTE) because it doesn't need to be emissions tested.
Now I have to get an ammendment to my blueslip, and then go and register the changes with the RTA and I'm all done.

As promised Baacchy, here are some more:
The dump
The cat, flex and piping. Note the cat flanged at both ends. Good for a single pipe replacement for the track days
The pooper. Much more surreptitious than the last one... which is still for sale btw (-:
The intercooler from the front. Again, nice and discreet.
The mountings for the intercooler.
Give you any ideas? Hope this helps!

blow me
it's a fuelling issue. tank is very low, so first thing will be to take a walk with a jerry can.
failing that, there's some kind of restriction in the fuel lines, which is making the pump work so hard (and loud)... was hoping to leavee that problem till the dyno tune, but may have to be brought forward

Hope you kept the stock wheels somewhere those things were beautiful.

Good spotting - sure is Ray's
Had it for well over half a year now, with the biggest problems being a dead catalytic converter and a water pump. Really not bad at all considering it's age and the fact that I do over 500kms/week!
It really is an amazing example. Sorry to hear that silver one is giving you grief. I remember it - it looked unbelievable. Hard to imagine it having problems!

Hey joorsh - you said with the building of the airbox - there is a section you can get to the filter for service purposes. I don't see where that is? Especially since most the box is welded?!... *confused*
Please enlighten me!
Car is looking good tho! Well done with the engineering! Lucky bugger!

WA_TRD_83: WRT the airbox: The right-hand side piece and the top piece ARE all one piece - welded together. When you un-bolt the top piece, you can lift the whole thing out with the side piece attached. It's mega-easy and doesn't require any fiddling or disconnecting of anything. It just un-bolts from the top and then the whole piece slides out.
And in further news, my interior project phase 2 is complete!
New shorter shifter with new knob.
New wheel
Now I just need to do something about those ugmo seats and carpets!

The centre consol has been re-trimmed in black leather. The dash I believe actually came from the factory black - but I re-dyed it recently because it was fading... so it's uber-shiny now. A little too shiny in fact - hence the dash matt (though this is also to help to preserve it).

I went to one local mob and they quoted $1200 in material. Mind you that was without seeing them, but fark me.

Hi Josh,
I've been silently following this thread for a while and am in awe of how nice your '61 is looking.
FWIW, I got my seats retrimmed in plush velour - which was a bit of a compromise, but one I'm happy with. Doesn't really go with the era of the car, but comfy and way cheaper than leather. The guys I went to were arseholes - but did an OK job. I'd recommend this fabric for anyone considering repholstery.
(see: http://www.celicasupra.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t= 10704). Also, while you're seats are out, now would be a good time to order new carpet from Knox.
Very impressed with your enclosed airbox. Have you thought about working on a cold air feed? It looks like you're in a similar dilema to me with regard to CAI. Only options I can think of is routing it through the wheel well to the front damn (which I think will foul on the wheel as I already have 2.75" IC piping in there) or behind the radiator (which will nulify any gains made). I'd be really interested to know if you've given it any consideration and if you've had any good ideas.
Congratulations on the engineering and all else!

Thanks Justin.
As for the carpets, I know they're in serious need of some attention. The carpet is actually green in some places, and red under the footwell! Although the knox option is very tempting, I think I've probably spent enough money for the time being. I'll probably just dye the carpet myself for $15 bucks or so. That way I'll at least get a year or so out of it, and then maybe fork out the $150 or so for some new knox carpets.
Regarding the CAI: Yes I have thought a fair bit about it. I had to dismiss the wheel-well feed for 2 reasons.
1) There are already 2 intercooler pipes down there, so there isn't much room
2) Due to the piping, the splash guard has been removed. This would mean that a CAI running down there runs substantial risk of picking up a LOT of water - especially driving through deeper puddles.
I have toyed with the idea of running one down under and around near the bottom of the radiator. If it was properly insulated it should be ok. As it stands right now though, there are 2 decent sized holes chopped out from under the airbox, so it's getting plenty of cold'ish air for the time being.
bbaacchhyy: I went for vynal for 2 reasons. It's easy to clean, and it looks good. I don't mind sticking to my seat a bit. I'd rather stick to it than slip off on every corner

Sounds very familiar . I *had* to re-do my carpets after repeated coolant puddling in the passenger's footwell following a busted heater core.
As to CAI, I would *like* to run a hose through the wheel well to the front air-dam (next to FMIC), but I'm dubious of wheel clearence. I agree that taking air from the wheel well itself doesn't sound safe in the wet. The two holes under your airbox you mention, where do they go to?
Thanks again for all the pics and info!

|
Where your piping comes off the turbo heading to the I/C is the location of my CAI - a bit of hose from the front bumper under the headlight directs some air up through there (directly under the air filter)
I'll probably replace my carpet and get some crappy seat covers and dye the door trims as done by Draven and others
Cheers

Oh, and here it is - interior phase 3 finished! Now I just need to save up for another 6 months or so and get the rear seats and roof/carpets done.
I'm totally stoked as to how well it turned out, and very reasonably priced too. All dials and levers now work, the seats no longer squeek and rattle. All the uncomfy busted springs are fixed, there's new padding everywhere. It's awesome! Not bad at all for $300 a pop! Sure beats buying new race seats, and feels just as good as far as I'm concerned! (OK, it's not quite as body hugging as a bride race bucket I tried out, but I reckon it's better for daily driving!)

Nice work Josh!!
Good to see the red beast getting some much needed TLC, although that small family of wombats must be sorry to see your old muffler go....
This MA61 cruise sounds interesting. Last weekend in Sept. perhaps?

I wish I had lotsa money... i'd get someone to retrim the seats, doors, and possibly dash with leather... padded on the doors and dash, and some real nice carpet and roof lining.
Leather smells so nice!
