Sorry, I put this up somewhere else:
As for the 5ME, get yourself a large K&N pod filter, try to jimmy up a joiner or something from the AFM to the filter and put it in the space you rip the air-box out of.
Get some high-density foam, the heat-proof stuff, with, if you can get it, the aluminium foil backing and use it so seal off the enclosure with the pod.
Then try to get some cold ventilation to the area.

You should be able to buy just a generic K&N filter to use.

Probably not, something he could keep if he changed to something like a 6MGE or 7MGE or something.
Might make a bit of a difference if u mucked around to take advantage of it, would sound better too.

Cold air induction may be beneficial, but apart from this I wouldn't bother. The 5M-E is a pretty breathless engine no matter what you do to it!

in isolation, no it wont make a difference, but all mods that improve air flow add up. dont expect a hi flow filter to do anything by itself realistically, other than make a cool sound.

cheers

It's interesting, try this, remove the scoop that is pop riveted to the round air filter box. Then rotate the mouth that is now visible towards the inner right guard. You'll see it fits in the factory hole there almost perfectly.

Strange isn't it, as if toyota had originally designed it to be hooked up that way to suck cold air through the guard but then changed their mind.

Run it on optimax or ultimate and set the timing to 14deg base timing instead of 10. Should give you a few ponies. Probably 5, he he he he:) enjoy

thanx for the info guys.
I'm sort of in 2 minds whether to do something about it,
or just cruise this engine till i can afford something else later down the track. I guess it's just so sluggish, my celica gets off the mark a bit better. I have replaced all filters etc.. and it only runs ultimate or optimax, but i haven't advanced the timing or anything. Moreso i would like a little better fuel economy as it's my gf's car most of the time and she drives it to work. The engine still pings a little, so I thought I'll get the fuel injectors cleaned , they've probably never been done after it's 240,000 Km life.. So with the filter, it has another 2 hoses running from the air box setup, do i put seperate filters on them? or run them from just behind the ram pod? I'm thinking the adapter is going to have to be custom made perhaps?? wondering if the money is worth it? Hey Paul, luv your car and your website, I would like to get some of those camber adjusters, is it better to get them? or put a camber kit on the lower control arm ? Got lots of stuff to do on the supra yet,
little body bits, but would like to keep it rolling clean - ie filter etc. I think my supra has a 2 1/2 inch exhaust and it's pretty loud, it's from up north, and has some dust bite on it's rubber parts.. How will putting on a ram pod effect the noise of the exhaust?? Main concern is , will the air intake help my fuel economy?
