so i would be best asking what the machinist uses and use the same? i will have a look into both of those programs as well.
Do you happen to work in a machine shop spectral?

Yep, your machining shop can advise on a package that will suit. Most packages can import most formats, but its generally easier (read cheaper), to send the machine shop the drawings in the same format as they use.
yep I work in a company that has fairly substantial machining capability. I don't do the work myself (I do I.T. work), but we have 3 4-axis CNC machines, waterjet cutters and a variety of computer lathes etc.
We can do commericial jobs such as these no problems, but its important to note that we will not design the components for legal liability reasons, we simply machine them. The design and engineering is up to you and your engineer.
If you want any more details, please PM me and I can put you in touch with our sales guys to give a quote, but machining time is generally around $90 per hour. Obviously the overall time needed is dependant on the complexity/extrusions on the job.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of making drawings, you could just take your brake setup to an engineer and he'll mill a bracket to suit. This is exactly what I did.
If you like I can put you onto the workshop where my brackets were milled.

My vote is for SolidWorks, nice and easy to use and apparently the tutorials are good. And yes, you can save a file in a bunch of different formats so you can send it to different programs.
But it could be very expensive (I was quoted $700 - $500 depending on number made, although that was a pretty complex ones)
By the way, what brakes are going onto what car?
