bbaacchhyy's 7M-GTE powered Mk2 Supra ** PICS OF NEW MAGS** (56k beware) Wed, 25 August 2004 12:25 Go to next message
Following on from Joorsh's example, I have decided to chronicle the modifications made to my car in turning it from a almost std Mk2, to something that willgo well, brake brilliantly and handle excelently. In other words, a car that is at it's best gloing for a blast through the hills on a beautiful Adelaide spring day.

It started with a Mk2 that already had a 7M-GTE w auto fitted, but unengineered. A quick test drive, and a deposit of $100, it was mine for the princely sum of $5,000.

http://img10.exs.cx/img10/8930/Front3qtrview1.jpg

http://img43.exs.cx/img43/5903/Enginebay1.jpg

After only about 2 months, it was taken off the road to begin ethe transformation. First to go was the auto, and in it's place went a W58 from a MA70, and a Grant Berry 2100lb PP, and extreme Clutch 6 puck sprung centre clutch.

 http://img66.exs.cx/img66/2998/2004-01-26026.jpg

The next thing was the brakes. The fronts are a combo of WRX STi discs (326mm dia x 30mm thick) and 300ZX Z32 alloy 4 pot calipers. The rims are 16x8" Simmons B45's with 225/50 tyres.

http://img15.exs.cx/img15/7629/2004-07-25042.jpg

http://img18.exs.cx/img18/708/2004-07-25043.jpg

http://img18.exs.cx/img18/8600/2004-07-25044.jpg

The rears are W140 Merc rears (300mm dia x 22mm thick) and 300ZX Z32 alloy 2 pot calipers. Those with a keen eye will notice the 5 stud conversion as well !!!

http://img52.exs.cx/img52/9297/2004-06-16051.jpg

http://img62.exs.cx/img62/834/2004-06-16052.jpg

The other set of rims that I have sourced (the 16's will be used for engineering and track work) are 17x8" CSA Gladiators +6 offset (pre-AU Ford fitment) that will have 235/45x17's

http://img12.exs.cx/img12/5914/2004-07-26002.jpg

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/8143/2004-07-26009.jpg

The springs are King's Lows, and the shocks are Koni Yellows (the rears took a bit of work), and all of the suspension bushes have been replaced as has the power steering rack.

Still to come is a Tru-Trak LSD and 3.58 ratio (may be used, not sure yet), top notch ARC I/C and 2.5" piping, T04e based CT26, LS1 MAF + MAFT, and to fit the LJM Strut bar purchased from the States.

Sorry for the long post to start with, but it is where I am at,

Cheers

Michael B

Picked up my custom braided brake lines (legal ones).

Also, here is a pic of the new ARC I/C and 2.5" piping. I'm picking up the I/C from getting dipped tomorrow morning (already back and VERY clean now

Love it!

Tell me more about your brake/stud conversion...

Work involved? Costs? Would you do the same second time around?

And does your taco work properly? Cause I have all this junky looking stuff on the right side of my engine bay that is apparently to make the silly little LED taco work, but I don't see it in yours.

Your engine bay is MUCH less cluttered than mine!

There is a thread that is about 5 pages long re the brakes ;

http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=21852&rid=3701&S=bf92c570f8883be2f6d0ba4 3db781cf7&pl_view=&start=0#msg_180631

Do it again - mmmmmmm, don't know, maybe would think about the MX83 route that Norbs and Southo are doing.

Tacho not yet connected, but have a Sixworks adapter, but may just change the resistors as well. Not sure. Will also convert to Analogue dash as well.

Less cluttered engine bay ? We'll see what happens once I finish installing some other parts Smile

Here are some more pics. The calipers are finally back from the powder coaters, they have been rebuilt with new seals, and are finally mounted ;

Front Brakes ;

Start of I/C mounting ;

Also getting organised to fit an oil cooler and thermostat sandwich plate (need a fitting made). The P/S has been removed which provides heaps more room and will aid in the plumbing of the new IC.

Ooorooo

OK, Here are some pics of the CAI that is on the car. It is rather dodgy, but I guess it works, but will be tidied up somewhat prior to engineering.

The smaller hole outboard was the hole that the original I/C pipe went, but will no longer be used. The mod is agrigultural, but it would work OK.

Time for an update,

The car is now on it's wheel for the last time King Std Height springs fitted (as the Low's were too low for my taste and I didn't want the hassle through engineering) and the brakes are completed. For intrests sake, it ssits about 5-10mm higher in the back and 10-15mm higher in the front with the std height springs !!
The Simmons have been sold, and I'm sticking with the CSA Gladiators and 235/45x17 tyres.

To finish it off requires the mounting and piping for the I/C, plumbing in the oil cooler, fitting new carpet, and then doing the dash conversion to analogue.

Here is a shot showing the oil thermostat block (from a Sigma Turbo) and the fittings to the oil cooler (7 row rotary cooler). Note the absence of the power steering crap, and the A/C has also been removed Very Happy

The bushes are Noltec, and as they are one piece they are harder to fit. The superPro's are two piece I believe whic make it easier, but can't/wont comment on quality difference.

The calipers are a nice size for sure, and light too !!!

bbaacchhyy the car looks beautiful. Looks like you have done a lot of work on the paint too.

The wheels make a huge difference to the look of the car. It must handle and stop a lot better now!

Cheers Danish,

No work done on the paint except a wash.

I hope it will handle and stop better, can't wait to take it for a blst in the hills.

Probably aim for Mallala next year, and it would be on weekends, but who knows, I may be able to take a day off as required !!

And those rims look great on the car, and those brakes are huge Smile

Thanks for all of the great feedback guys.

I am in the process now of sorting out the I/C piping, and am going 2.5" all the way, including the pipe over the engine. The pipes will be following a similar routing to that of the Rabid Chimp kit (US based Mk2 supplier), but my I/C is even bigger.

My core is 480mm wide x 380mm high and 75mm thick (some 25mm wider and 75mm taller than Aarons), and is the one shown in one of the pics up further (although it is now beautifully cleaned after being chemically dipped.

I'll post some pics as I keep fiddling (had to make a slight adjustment to clear the LJM strut bar).

Cheers

Time for some more news.

Turbo is getting put back together at ATS, and is basically a T04 core with CT26 comp and turnine cover, but with a T04 P Trim turbine and T04B Super V Trim Comp wheel !!!!!

Here are some pics of the progression of the new 2.5" I/C piping ;

I'll be doing some wrapping and heat protection for sure. Autospeed has some interesting articles relating to this. I'm afaraid that this is one of the byproducts of a 7M, even if you route it like a 1G, it still goes on top of a really hot source.

The engine itself is not as hot as the turbo, but the radiator is a great heatsink as well.

As mentioned before, it is not ideal, but everything is a compromise (as you are finding out with the brakes...)

I saw what you meant about that triangle in the corner of the bay, without the radiator there was a massive amount of room.

With the radiator there, I can see what you mean about there being much less room, the passenger side still has heaps, but the drivers side has closed up quite considerably.

Well without the shroud it would. Which is how mine is at the moment. The other side is massive as well. It's just the radiator that gets in the way.

Haha, you know what I mean. If it weren't for the shroud it would fit no problems. Unfortunately I'm going to have to live without for the moment and see how we go.

Nice,

Btw, you should rename the thread from "56k beware" to "56k fuckoff"

I tried loading this thread the other night to see what you had done on the rears, 15mins and 5 meg later, it finally loaded.

I think you have about 7meg of pictures there now.

Time to learn the ancient art of compression bbaacchh's

No shit. For me it was more of a pain trying to scroll through them than wait for them Smile

On a side note, I'm still waiting for my exhaust and IC piping, he managed to get 2" through those little triangle bits. Going to be toight when I get a shroud that fits.

Already got an M-series shroud. Doesn't come close to fitting, fan is in a different spot cos the 1G is so much smaller.

Well after a lot longer than it should have taken, the I/C piping is just about there. The last bit will get tacked this afternoon, pick up a little more gay blue silicone hose, a final test fit, and then out it comes to be fuilly welded, cleaned and powder-coated.

Other decisions are that the stereo will go as part of the weight saving program (will be posted in For Sale section once I get pics), I have sourced a plumb back ARC BOV (thank's to Scott's mate Brad), the 3 HKS Guages (electronic EGT & Boost, and mechanical Oil P) will be mounted where the stereo goes, the new alloy radiator (Ex-V8Supercar) and EL Thermofans to be fitted, new carpet to be installed and then it should be ready.

Stand by for some more pics when I get my shite in a pile Very Happy

Keep me posted on how the gauges work out, I'm trying to do the same thing. Are you just going to mount them flush or try to have them angled up and towards the driver?

since you've looked into the guages a bit.. what's the feasability (sp?) of fitting a stereo *and* 3 guages in there?

buccy - they'll be mounted flat, as due to their size and the space available, they can't be angled (may still try, but unlikley).

Draven - not unless you have smaller guages. Mine are 65mm dia, and all 3 take up the whole space. I could have mounted both, but wasn't interested in major hacking or expense to make it fit.

I/C pipes will come out over the weekend to get fully welded and powdercoated - Finally Rolling Eyes

Thanks Luke.

Th 4 potters were partly because I had them and partly becuase they are nice and light, but the only downside is the pad size. Hence the reason why some Evo VI Front calipers are on their way over, but having seen CruZida's results, they may still be OK.

Yours will be fine, and sometimes what works easy is still PFG !!!
