T18 Diff gone noisey - options?

Hi,
On a recent trip from Sydney to Melbourne my T18 diff started to make more noises than usual. I think this started after a little trail of what 150kmh felt like Normally I've only had a bit of crown and pinion noise on deceleration. Now there is a constant whirring noise. I'm too scared now to go on long trips.
Does anyone know what other model centers can swap over? T18s are pretty rare these days and the ones I've seen in the wreckers look like they have seal leakage. I've also been unable to pull out the axle's even with a small pulling hammer - any tips?
What number of splines/diameter of axle?
The front housing on an RA61(?) looks the same. I am also thinking that diffs from auto's would be in better nick in general, but don't know if they have different ratio's? The damn wreckers are taking off the plates with the codes.
What would a diff reconditioner centre actually do and how much would they charge? Any recommendations.
Cheers
David

T18's have a T series diff, so you can swap the diff centre from any other car with a T series diff. This includes most RWD Celicas, heaps of Coronas and probably other stuff as well, so you won't have any problem finding one at any old wrecking yard.

Thanks Norbie,
I'll go ahead and pull a centre out of an auto celica I've seen. Got to get a hold of an axle puller thingie that goes on the studs. May as well do the wheel bearings as well eh? Never done a diff before.
But what would a diff reconditioner give me over a wrecker part? I guess at $55 for a centre from the wreckers that answers part of the question
Cheers

Arrgggh,
a T series but not any T series????
I've looked at some diff comparison charts but haven't found one complete enough for all of the T series.
If I recall right the T18 is a T082 (4.1) emm errr or was it T032 (3.5).....

The T292 is the 4.1 ratio, and it's pretty common in T18's, Celicas and Coronas. Probably what you're looking for.

Naaaa,
just got home, checked, its a T302 so there!
Yeh, saw the axle code list but without a corresponding model list I'm a bit stuffed.
Why do some/most of the wreckers take off the specs plate when its the VIN plate that would seem to count? Errr I don't suppose they think people will pay for parts without knowing they're the right ones, duhhh?
Anyway 3.5 vs 4.1 is only .6 so who cares

Only .6? That's a pretty big difference actually.

Thanks Rob,
I really appreciate the help, you must have a better diff chart than I do.
I've got 3.727:1 and the RA40 is 4.1 and RA60 is 3.909
Get one of each and suck and see!
My diff is a 'taller' ratio i.e., less revs of engine for 1 rotation of wheel.
If I upgrade to a 3T-GTEU and W58 which ratio is best????
Can anyone point me to a dummies guide to gear ratio/diff ratio/torgue /engine matching?
Cheers

i used that link posted up there
_T_29_2_
T is series 6.7".
29 is ratio.
2 is 2 pinion non lsd.
the 3.7 wouldnt be too bad with the 3T-GTE, as for what ratio u should decide on depending on power and torque, i cant help u there, but i can say that ive had the 4.1 and the 3.9 behind my 1G-GE, i didnt notice any rev difference at 110kmp/h, nor notice any drop in acceleration, but i did notice that with the 3.9 it was much nicer to drive in traffic...
dunno if that helps your decision but i thought id post it anyways..

Thanks,
>i used that link posted up there
yeh saw that. But models! What models have what diffs!
OK, I took a punt cos I saw T series in RA 40/60 but there are other models?
>2 is 2 pinion non lsd.
Got that too. The chances of an LSD centre are like zilch, zero, diddly squat. I like the idea of replacing my crunchy centre for $55 vs $700.
>the 3.7 wouldnt be too bad with the 3T-GTE......
yeh more power/torque steeper ratio.
So if I could find an exact replacement T302 (3.7) I'd be better off - so here goes a post on parts wanted - cos all the T18 diffs I've seen in wreckers are stuffed just like mine.
Interesting about.....
>but i can say that ive had the 4.1 and the 3.9 behind my 1G-GE, i didnt >notice any rev difference at 110kmp/h, nor notice any drop in >acceleration, but i did notice that with the 3.9 it was much nicer to >drive in traffic...
Not drop in acceleration but where was the 'powerband' - with 4.1
I would expect you'd be reving higher (above powerband) for equivalent acceleration? How does a 1G-GE compare to a 3T-GT??
Again thanks for the info
