A call to all helpful toymods persons. Fri, 27 August 2004 06:28 Go to next message
Howdy all,

I'm looking at purchasing a ga70 halfcut to do the much publicised and currently coveted 1g-gte conversion (ra28). Assuming I already have thus:

Efi fuel system done
Exhaust
Half-cut
Tools
Stick welder
Block and tackle
Car stands

Is there anything i don't have, and should chase up now?
Also, i'd like to gauge the interest of brisbane folks to come and help with this conversion? Beer and subway provided Razz
I was looking at starting during university break, about a month away.

Any Brisbanites with experience in this conversion be interested?

I am not a complete mechanical tard, just would like some help.

Cheers, Matt

Have you searched high and low over these forums?
Have you view the documents that the main page links to?

Most of the info you need is on here somewhere

Yes, i've comprehensively searched the tech docs etc.

I know better than to shoot my mouth off around here before using the search and tech article sections.

Just wanted to make sure, considering there are always little things that don't get a mention.

Anything that is an a guide or article listed as needed will be aquired, just wanted to see if there were any extras that are helpful or necessary and go unmentioned.

There are always little extra's that occur.

Mainly becuase people forget everything that they do during a conversion, becuase they aren't taking notes daily.

They sort of do the conversion, and a month later decide to do a write up on it.

My suggestion to you, would be to go through the whole conversion in your head, step by step.
Pretend to put the motor in there, make sure it wont foul anything, etc etc.
Look at every aspect, wiring, exhaust, cooling, fueling, air, etc etc, make sure you know every step that you have to do.

And above all, just dive in and hope for the best.

You will love doing it.

What he said x 1000.

If you have sorted out engine mounts, crossmember, steering arm or sway bar, and your gearbox crossmember - you have 99% done already.

Have fun - enjoy !

Mitch.

I think my eccentricity will have achieved new heights, when people see me working an imaginary block and tackle, and cussing at invisible bolts....sounds like fun. Hehe.

Cheers, Matt

Respect the words of Cruzida.

It only took him 7 months to complete a planned '3 day' conversion.

.....tuesday.

Thats coz I didnt do it in my head beforehand.

Anyway, I realised the other day, that if things HAD gone to schedule, I wouldn't have had enough money to finish it.
And I would have been one of those ppl waiting around for money....

good idea as i do with every coverssion, is to change every hoses and belts. change plugs, filter and use an engine oil flush as any 1g will have been sitting for awhile. if you use the radiator out of the cut, get it flushed and change the themostat as it will have been sitting without water for a long time. dont use coolant straight away just use water for a 1000k to get the crap out of the system then flush and use coolant. if it has over 100k km on the clock might be an idea to take the sump of and clean the pickup,as the japense are known for not getting services and not changing oil.
mick
p.s dont rev the engine just let it idle when you flush the oil, with a proper oil flush .i dont mean empty the oil and then idle it.get the injectors cleaned at the last moment when you are about to fire the beast up. clean inside the throttlebody. theres a bit more but im sure you get the drift if not PM me.

In addition to what kingmick suggests i would suggest replacing the timing belt, and the front and rear main oil seals, along with the cam shaft seals. Although the front seals arnt so necessary on an N-S engine, its still easier to do. Same with the rear main, loads easier to do out of the car, as i can testify.
A note for FWD, doing any of that stuff is a total bitch when in car, so i would definately suggest doing it out of car.

Also as cheap insurance i would advise doing head gasket (not sure on availability for 1G, although they came in the GA61 over here so probably pretty good), and definately water pump. Ive seen about 4 come out of halfcuts either fully or partially seized, and heard many more horror stories. Again cheap insurance. Although can blow out the budget a bit.

The GA61 was never released here. Any 1G stuff bar stuff for a 1GFE has to come from Toyota Japan.

Ah ok. Still, im guessing a 1G head gasket wont be too hard to get, my TRD 4A one came from Japan in under a week.

In theory Smile In practice I've found shit for the 1G to be a pain to get if it isn't already in the country.

Ah ok, must be different for 4A gear, ive never really had a problem.
Still the theory is the same. Replace bits which are hard/a pain to get to while it is out. Cheap insurance.

I would say
F/R Main Oil Seals ($30)
Cam Shaft Seals ($20)
Water Pump ($120)
Timing Belt ($40)

They were the prices for my 4AGE gear, all from Toyota at trade minus a bit.
So its still pretty cheap insurance.

HG was a "cheap" $60 too.

I did get genuine seals for the engine eventually. My recommendation is replace them by all means, but dont get genuine. Take the old seals and get them matched. I got the same seal for my cams that Toyota wanted like $20 each for, for $2.60.

The 1G timing belt is like $75. I definetly agree though, do it all while it's out.
