pics have arrived!

grotty engine.....

the empty bay

Update
car is coming along really good, i got it totalling stripped. so its just the shell, no chrome trim or anything.
engine is ready to be removed this week for a rebuild while the shell is being resprayed.
ill have some pics real soon...
just a few things to note for RA28 owners. allthough the car appears to be completly free of rust from the outside and inside. i found a bit of rust behind the rubber seals on the 1/4 windows, also little bits of rust under the hatch back rubber door seal, and there was a puddle of water inside the car on the right hand side( its like to the right of the spare tyre and the fuel tank fill up hose actually went through the puddle) i guess this is because my hatch door seal was stuffed and the glass seal was stuffed also.
so if you working on those areas id just check em out. or looking at buying one anytime soon(it would be good to c how much rust is there)
otherwise everything is going good and i am going to buy all new weatherstrips for the whole car.....expensive
pics will be up really sooon
here are some other pics of it a while back

Hey my name is Jeff , Please, if you read this make any suggestions on what I can do to save money and perhaps add a few tips on how I should go about doing things.
I am 15 years old and joined this great site just one week ago. I inherited a 77 RA28 from my brother who bought it for $1500, it was in good nick, no dings, no rust and had done 75000km's. He had the ideas to create a great car but lost interest very quickly, although he had the cam grinded by Crowe Cams, extractors put on, port n polish, head machined by Headline, valves reseated and guided also by Headline. This made the RA28 perform considerably better with improved economy, improved torque and generally made the car pull harder up hills etc. My dad is going to put in a bit of cash for the cause but I have to help out aswell (3 grand in my bank to spend wisely). Tho I need some of that to support my love for Motocross racing aswell (currently racing KX125 at state level). As I wish to transform this old school Celica in to a Mini Mustang type car I have made a to do list. The first few things that need to be fixed' were all things that happened between the time that my brother bought the car and when I inherited it.
Here's the list, Its in a rough order
Stuff that NEEDS to be done
New front mud guards (hit kangaroos), New Blinkers etc (smashed), New battery
Windows Need attention (there not straight! Dont align with seals)
Cracks in dash need attention
When I get a job
Mag wheels
Rust removed
Paint job
Custom spoiler
New carpet for whole interior, New floor mats
Put Sylvia, 180sx or supra front seats in
Back seat re-trimmed
New seals to waterproof, New Speedo dials (currently deformed), New CD player and speakers, New gear stick knob, New trick steering wheel
After my dad and myself win lotto :):):)Power steering(if possible), Power windows
Window tint
Central locking
Brake upgrade, Peugot Discs / Hilux calipers
Car lowered and suspension upgraded
Supra 5 speed gearbox, 1G-GTE engine.
Sorry I aint got ne pics, i lost the charger to the didgi cam:)
Please add your thoughts and opinions, any suggestions and tips will be appreciated
Well dang its about time I shutup and stopped wasting forum space
Great site BTW!! Kewl articals and forums.
CHEERS!

Yeah a 1G, thats a great idea. Then he can just wait until he is 21+ before he can insure it.
From the sounds of things
- Engine sounds nice and hot. I would maybe look for a twin side draught carbi set up but only after the rest of the car has been looked after.
- Make sure the suspension is in good condition. If it is ok then leave it. If it is avarage then go a little lower and upgrade the springs rate.
- How bad is the paint??? Give it a heavy cut and polish then a good buff and see what the old girl looks like after than (con a few mates into helping)
- With 3 grand to spend I would upgrade the interior and the wheels after the above mentioned stuff. Don't worry about a big sterio system yet as you wont be driving the car for a year and a bit so you can save up for those things latter.
So
1. Engine sounds ok. So long as it runs well, leave it.
2. Get the suspension upgraded. Don't waste money on fancy shocks and camber tops yet. Just good shocks, heavier rated springs and a good set of bushes and sway bars.
3. Clean up exterior. The thing doesn't have to be a show stopper but you must take pride in your ride.
4. Do up the interior. Nice seats (you can do better than stock silvia). I would look into the OBX range of seats as they a cheap but well made and very comfortable. Nice carpet and a good sterio. Go for a really good headdeck but around average speakers as they are easily replaced when you have more money.
hope this helps
Cheers
Mad RS

since your 15 you wont be driving it on your own for a couple years
firstly dont worry bout mags, custom anything, tints, etc... they will all come in good time there are more important things to do
therefore i would start and give the whole mechanics a very good once over, make sure motor is good, gearbox, diff and complete suspension... most of this, if not all, can be done yourself and would cost a couple hundred for oils, sparkies and other little stuff, if suspension needs doing, springs dics/drums then it would be bout $1000 (this is all new suspension though)... also if you do this first then i would start the car at least twice a week so that the seals dont dry up during the rest of the restore/fix up
once thats done and assuming you went the whole 9yrds then you got bout $2k left...
a complete retrim in vynal is bout $2000-$2500 MAYBE $3000 MAX including carpet, roof, all seats and door trims and should even get the dash done too. now if there is anything good in it then you can minus it and it would cost less but usually unlikely and all needs done... even if you change the front seats you still gotta buy them, so therefore your a $1k short already LEAVE THIS TILL LAST
then you want to do the shell, if your gonna do it properly then straight off the bat before touching it you need $1k for rubbers (this is all round, every single rubber you need, you can get these from rare spares)... other than that you start doing everything yourself and start cutting the rust out and fixing that; for every rust spot you cut out, straight away weld a plate and fix it straight off and then move on to the next rust spot, if you just cut everything out then by the time you get to the last one it is rusted more and you gotta cut more, so do them one by one. then once thats done you need a spray (roughly $3000 for 2pac in oven providing it is only a rub back, mask and spray)... the body can vary in cost depending on what you do yourself and get done by someone so i cant give a good estimate here
BUT your looking for a proper job something like this :-
- $1000 mechanics
- $2500 interior
- not sure bout your state but roughly $1000 rego
- $1000 rubbers (cheaper if you can reuse the current ones where possible)
- $3000 spray
- $1000-$2000 for everything else body wise
so all up i recon your looking at bout $9500 but you will have an awsome restored car...therwise you can always short cut but dont be surprised if your not completely happy at the end
PS good luck with the motocross and car

hey guys, thanx heaps for the advice, its really going to help me out.
The 18rc engine is still in good nick, plus i already have new piston rings, new big end, new gaskets n seals and a timing chain kit to put in.
There isnt really any rust at all, just the stuff that will rub off with a quick sand job.
Unsure about the Suspension condition, the diff has a bit of a noise but will get that fixed up at a transmission place in town(dad is going to pay for that).
The paint is perished, plus my bro did start to sand it back and strip it so it looks like shiat atm. There are a few tiny dings that the panel beater will have to fix up, nothing major tho.
I took out all dash and console components yesterday and carpet etc. so inside is absolutly bare.
dash is a bit messed up so ill have to get a new one made somewhere(any 1 know of a rough price for this?
Speedo dials are warped from heat
My father and i will be doing the carpet and stuff ourselves(is this a difficult job or do u think it is worth the cash to get it done properly)
oh and for the seals, there is a website that advertises new rubbers made for old cars, so ill be getting some new ones:)

New molded carpets from Knox http://www.knoxautocarpets.com.au/prices.htm
FRONT & REAR PLUSH PILE
$115.00 + FREIGHT = $130.00
Bill Thompson Auto Rubbers (for new seals)
$225 for the RA28
03 9870 1728
Craig Vayne Sheetmetal Fabrications (if ur sills are rusted - mine are!)
Phone: (07) 4122 2326
Sills $35.00
Phil Eacott, in Canberra.
He has a contact who makes fibreglass spoilers for the TA23/RA23/RA28's.
Phil is a member of The Canberra Celica Group, contact him on 0412 699 144
As far as a paint job goes, im going to get mine done at TAFE - about $1,500 and they do it in 2pac enamel! Plus they have to do a good job cause they get marked on it
Interior - Im respraying my roof lining with vynl die, as well as all other vynl in the car. Buying a roll of vynl and doing the doors and the majority of the rest.
Dont get the seats retrimmed, just get covers for the back ones, and get 2nd hand buckets out of a current model sports car.
Gear knob etc are cheap. I got a replica Momo Competition gear knob for $20 from Repco! Looks awsome.
Ive got an RA28 so youve got simmilar plans to me
Try to do as much as you can yourself, cause labour is expensive!

jeffro: why are you bumping this thread?
seriously: this is how much i spent on getting my RA40 rebuilt, converted to turbo and looking a shite-load better:
<http://members.optushome.com.au/mkhala/red_celica/ budget.html>
some of that stuff you're planning top do yourself, but whatever budget you come up with, expect to blow it big time.

I just finished re-doing my interior, consisting of new door trims from an RA28 ($50 for the pair), carpets out of a RA28 ($50), 4m of black vinyl at $15 p/m, almost 2 cans of spray adhesive, 3 cans of black vinyl spray, and a can of black gloss spray paint. Now its all sexy and black just going to buy black back seat covers and wait to source out some black boot carpet...
