icon5.gif  AFM to MAP conversion....available/possible? Sat, 28 August 2004 13:52 Go to next message
I am building a Caterham style clubman and running a 20V Silvertop. With the engine now mounted in the RWD positition the airbox inlet now faces rearward. I would like to modify/purchase?/fabricate a new airbox that will allow me to draw cold air from the front of the car. Unfortunately there is very little room in front of the engine and so I would like to do without the AFM by converting to MAP.
I know what you're thinking, get an aftermarket ECU. Unfortunately as the car is not yet registered it will have to have the original computer in place when I get it engineered/registered to prove it passes the current emissions ADR's.

So, Is there a way of converting from AFM to MAP?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Mr Shin.

How much are black top computers going for these days?
We have already done the wiring (not yet taped up though) for the car, is the blacktop loom that different or just the MAP sensor part different?

Rex planning simply to take the air feed fom the scuttle using an air box area like this. Simple. Taking air from the front not make a difference to this setup.

However he also modifying the top of the airbox so the car doesnt require 'power bulge'.

Unless work manages to get another Blacktop Very Happy ...

Thanks Rex,

We are trying to keep the scuttle area as free from clutter as possible. To keep the master cylinders down low we are using the same custom made floor mount adjustable brake bias pedals as Pete B (pictured in your post) and sealed battery is in passengers footwell. Fuse and relay box that can be seen next to petes battery are under our scuttle.

Any ideas on AFM to MAP conversion anyone?

PS. Pete's airbox is fed by a NACA duct in the bonnet so there is no need for a bulge.

Cheers,
Julian.

so there shouldn't be a problem getting a stable map reading from a silvertop if you run an aftermarket ecu??

Apparently the way they do it is to tap into each of the runners (between the butterfly and the head) and run them into a single line which then feeds the sensor to get a decent signal. I've heard that you don't get enough of a reading or something if you just try to get it off one of the throttles.
It's been done HEAPS of times in clubbies. most clubbies built since around 2000 run the 20V silvertop and a fair proportion of those now run aftermarket ECU's. Try contacting the PRB distributor in your stateand ask them. All of their 20V's run MOTEC and read off a MAP sensor.
