Nark wrote on Fri, 20 September 2002 12:21 | Higher profile just means that there is more sidewall... Normally the sidewalls on high profile tyres aren't as stiff, so when you're having a fang, they tend to squish and squirm. This is bad for road feel, plus these tyres have a tendancy to hang on, then flex, then suddenly let go when the sidewall can't take it any more...
I don't really know of any advantages of high sidewalls. Unless you're in a 4WD.
Maybe this should be in its own thread, don't really want to hijack this thread... My name's not Osama...

so is it better to have low or high profile ?

For handling, lower profiles are better 'coz the sidewalls are normally stiffer and don't flex as much.

lower profiles are great for handling but higher sidewalls are better for comfort and absorbing the bumps, track car has low profiles while off road ie, rally car has high profiles,
also may i make a point which i find many people don't know,
when a tyre says 185/60/R14
the 185 stands for 185mm in width,
the R14 stands for the rim size
and the profile 60 means that the height of the sidewall of the tyre is 60% of the width
i find many people out there think its 60mm or something where if you look at a 185/60/r14 tyre and a 210/60/r14 tyre
the sidewalls "profile" is much higher on the 210 tyre.

OK........
205/40/17
225/60/14
which would handle better (id say the 17" although the 14" has more width ?!?!

The 40 series tyre is going to be shitloads better. The sidewalls on a stock MA61 are far too chunky, you can feel them flexing all over the place when you're cornering hard. Definitely not good.

the wider tyre might get more traction but the height of it isnt very good if you intend of driving sideways around corners all the time
4wd's as in landcruisers and such not skylines etc. have tall sidewalls as it is better for offroad especially as when the car is 'bogged' the trick is to let out most of the air and to have about 10psi left which makes the tyre 'fatter' as part of the sidewall becomes the base tread
im thinking out loud here but wouldnt a car with say 225/10/17's
accidentally hit a speedbump a bit too fast (or a gutter, pothole etc.) have more chance of damaging the wheel than a normal sized tyre ?...like a 225/50/15

hey les
drag cars tyres are made out of very very soft rubber....ever seen a high powered car 'launch' of the starting line ?....if you look closely you'll notice the back wheels it looks like black jelly, as the initial force is going from the wheels to the ground it looks like some sort of oblong shape as it gets stretched out, as opposed to the force not getting to the ground and just 'chucking a burnout', of course this quickly forms back into a regular wheel shape once the car is moving, excellent grip though

Another Question which may answer CelicaMad's is with lower profile tyres....do u have to pump in more PSI ???

not sure about that one but i think you would still run around the same psi but you would have to pump less air into the tyre to get that psi reading, but you would want to make sure they had enough air as you wouldn't want to hit a bump and find the rim got crunched so you probably would increase the preassure a little

and those big wheels cost big $$$ too sometimes more than the cars worth
how do you get insurance to cover that ?
imagine ringing up aami, "yeah i hit a speed bump too fast and stuffed both my front rims, its gonna cost $3000 to fix"...."sorry sir your car is a write off"

Low profile tyres typically don't need as much tyre pressure. I run 40psi in my tyres to help stiffen the sidewalls and prevent flexing, but if I had low profile tyres it wouldn't be necessary to run such high pressures because the sidewalls are stiffer to begin with.

also never go off what the manufacturer says for tyre preassure they usually state a preassure which is for best comfort not handling, if you have your tyres pumped up correctly it will be just about impossible to roll your car from cornering to fast a car often rolls from the tyre being pulled off the rim and the actual rim digging into the ground.
