help needed with hilux 74 Sun, 29 August 2004 21:32 Go to next message
could someone tell me what engine a 1974 toyota hilux has, all i know it is 1.6l but what type of engine, someone told me they share the same engine as the early 70's 1600cc celica´s?
Also what about engine transplants, what would be the most ideal option? A bit more power would be nice

It is a 12r motor as found in early Hilux, Hiace corona and daihatsu 4wd vehicles. Can be interchanged with 2r but why would you.

18r motors do not interchange without changing gearbox as well and modifying engine mounts although this not a difficult conversion.Would also need to change diff centre.

If you want more go would definetly look at swapping in an 18r or 18rg motor and putiing 79 to 82 hilux/hiace disks on front.

Basically most stuff from hiaces and hiluxes up to the early 80's can be used

dont be a pussy, put in a 1UZFE, they go a treat and I am considering putting one in my 95 Lux, although if turbos are your thing then a 1GGTE or 1JZGTE would go a treat as well...

I think you'll find trying to get more go out of the 12R is not really worth it...
They are an old motor...

For simplicity i'd go for an 18R-C and W50 conversion...
and to get the parts you just need to buy an old celica ! (RA23-RA40)

This will mean cutting a hole in the tunnel for the shifter, but that shouldn't be much of an issue. and you'd just remove the linkages and shifter from the steering coloumn...

You'd probably find that the 12R from stock is good for about 60-80Hp (not much!) And yours is probably tired as heck !

the 12R was never designed to make lots of power ! and you'll find it hard (impossible?) to get performance parts for it !

So many people pull this shit out of their celicas (18R+W50) you should be able to pick em up for a steal. I'd say pay no more than 200 bucks, unless there's work done to the 18R.

I threw out an 18R a few months ago and the W57 I had with it is collecting dust somewhere in the corner of my shed.

I replaced the old 2y in my sons hilux with a 302 Windsor , but Hilux + light truck tyres + wet roads + 302 Windsor = Hilux bent like a banana !!!!!
It was good while it lasted .
