Which turbo? Mon, 30 August 2004 05:02 Go to next message
I said on past posts that i would do a sr20det conversion on the sprinter, but being realistic (not that it can't be done) its a lot more expensive, I already have a IHI VF22, and my plans are for the next year starting in January a late model 4agze with a 4ag throttle. Not noing how the turbo is going to react with the engine. But i dont want lag,i want more response.
Are there any tricks that can make the car more responsive, to the manifold or the exhaust etc?
Is this turbo too big? Rolling Eyes
If it is i might just sell it and use a 1gz super on the 4agze instead.

which car is that turbo off of? i know for sure if you want response get a t25 from a ca18 or a sr20, a td04 from a 94+wrx for a little more top end than the t25, or if you can afford it a gt28rs will get you power and response

VF22 will be tooo big, its the biggest of the Sti turbos. Would be good for a 4age built purely for the strip, but too laggy for the street.

fiddle with the exhaust cam, you can make the turbo come on harder and quicker than you think Very Happy also the turbo manifold design is crucial the shorter the runners the quicker it will come on, and vic verca. intercooler choice, pipe length, BOV are all variables you need to look at for optimum response..with turbo's there is alot more adjustment that can be done..maybe a late model SR20DET T28bb would be the go?

I have a quote for a S15 turbo.
Is that a better turbo?

The T28 is the turbo you want. Just make sure it's off an s14a or an s15. The older s14 has a T28 on it, but it's not ballbearing. The s14a and s15 both have ballbearing T28's. Try and find one of them but make sure you check for shaft play before you buy. A lot of people love thrashing those turbo's - lord knows I did Smile

Which sr20 are you putting in? There are three basic flavours (well a lot more than that actually, but 3 BASIC ones) red rocker, black rocker, and updated variable cam thingo one from the s14 and s15. If you're going to be chucking aftermarket cams, ECU etc at it, then don't bother getting one of the s14 or 15 engines - just go for a red or black rocker (but be careful cause they're getting old now) and yoink the turbo off the s15. With some minimal cam work and a good ecu I've seen red-rocker sr20's with t28's on them hitting full boost at 3 grand and holding it al the way to 7 1/2. It's a good affordable combo.

Check on all the silvia forums and places like Justjap, SSS, etc. The T28 BB's go for around $600 normally, but I've seen good ones going for up to the $800 mark.

right - well I don't know much about the ze. But I do know that the T28 is an excellent little turbo. Nice big exhaust housing and ballbearing, so it comes on boost good and early. Don't push it over 20psi though - it just becomes really, really inefficient and will shorten its lifespan significantly.

The T28 is basically a T25G with a T03 exhaust housing (if that helps).

If the ze is a comperable engine to the sr20 in terms of stroke/displacement and exhaust gas flow (or even slightly less), then it should be a very good matchup.
