Box size. The sub its self takes up airspace in the box. If the sub is mounted with the magnet outside the box you can make a smaller box. As to the sub output, i've tried it myself but couldn't really hear any difference. Mind you that was with a pre-made box. It could be different with a custom job.

ok the situation is i got a 15" rockford fosgate
and a 50L box i thnk... im not sure well its a big box
im just bored and seeing the 2 ways i could mount my sub facing inwards or out
ive been told that facing a sub inwards produces more bass is this true or a old wives tale?

I couldn't see an increase in bass by firing the sub into the box cause you'd be increasing the box size. But really the only way find this out would be to try it and see.

if i understand correctly...you can point the sub out and it works just as well (not sure about producing more bass by facing in). But if your not satisfied with the bass when its pointing out, get a fibre-glass sheet and cover the front of the box...
