I have a 5me alternator with two large thick white wires, one black/yellow wire, one black/red wire and one other colour wire which have been cut off. problem is that it is on a 5mge engine.
This 5mge engine has two large thick black/red wires, one black/yellow wire, one black/red wire and one other colour wire sticking out which have been cut off. I have looked at several wiring diagrams and am still unsure of correct wiring. can someone lead me in the right direction here?

You should only have 4 connections to the alternator (5me or 5mge).
1. The +B terminal that delivers current from the alternator. This should have a thick white wire coming from it. This is a separate terminal with a nut on it to do up the white wire.
The other three connections below are all through a 3 pin plug.
2. The IG terminal. This is the feed from the ignition switch (via the IG relay) to the alternator. This should be Black/Yellow.
3. The S terminal. This is what the alternator uses to measure the battery voltage and determine what voltage it should output. This is normally black.
4. The L terminal. This is what drives the charge lamp. With the ignition on, and the plug disconected from the alternator if you ground this terminal, the charge lamp should come on.
With a mutimeter you can identify IG. Then sort out which one L is, the one left is then S.

I'm guessing - but maybe someone has rewired it and the red/black thicker wires are meant to take the place of the thick white wires. Do they have a lug on the end of them?

no they dont have lugs on the end, im guessing they have been cut off. they are the only wires on the engine which do not go anywhere.
also they are on the wrong side of the engine to link to the alternator. confusing stuff
