Can't help you with the artsy movies. I don't watch that shit from fear of utter boredom.
You interested in new (ie: in the cinema) films? Or old? Or anything?

Hi,
Betty Blue is the go. It's French, and subtitled if I remember correctly. It goes for something like 4 hours. I watched at the State Theatre years ago, and they had an intermission break.
It's not mainstream, but not art house. It's a love story, but not in the shit way that Hollywod movies are.
I think you would like it! Very chick friendly.
Cheers,
Justin

Try 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico"
Its american spagetti western style but manages to take the mick out of itself. Don't let the cover fool you, the star of the movie is the guy who steals all the right scene's at the right time.....
"Are you a Mexican, or a Mexi-can't ?"

Check out "Equilibrium".
low-budget arse-kicking, and surprisingly good.

In terms of old movies, Cube would have to be my favorite movie. Low-ish budget and not really noteworthy actors, but has a great plot, some cool effects and an ending you wouldn't expect.

Hi,
Define "old" movies. What period are you talking about? My wife collects movies and she likes the old stuff. Got hundreds of VHS and hundreds of DVD - ranging from old classics to the new stuff, including a few series etc.

they ran out of money for evangelion series.
the movies were awesome...but somewhat perverted.
if you like eva, watch ghost in the shell: stand alone complex and 2nd gig (up to ep.13 subbed currently)
one of the funniest movies i remember is east is east. first UK non-mainstream movie i watched.
a while ago i watched the secretary with a few friends. kinda interesting. watched monsters ball last night and it's a pretty piss weak film.

Yeah, very 'Astroboy'. But good.
Mononoke Hime is good too but not on release I think. It screens at the Astor from time to time, including once this month!
I liked Serial Experiments Lain. Just the ominous nature of it. There wasn't really a feeling of climax ever, just so ominous.
The Quiet Room was very low-budget and simple. Three characters, all filmed inside one house. This actually became a creative tool, symbolising (for me) the isolation of the main character (a ~10yr old girl). No distraction, no exterraneous fluff. Just direct, frank and honest. Makes you see how stupid some adult constructs are sometimes. Life through the eyes of a ten year old makes it clear how simple some things should be and how complicated we make them instead.
^^ Um, I liked it. Again, not on release, but can be viewed at (or hired from) the ACMI library (I think...).

cowboy bebop and trigun are also very good.
how cool is his gun in hellsing (very cool).
if your interested in something more abstract but still cool take a look at hack.//sign (probalby not for everyone)its about someone who gets stuck inside an MMORPG
ive seen every kensin movie + episode, it does drag on near the end (espeically if you try and watch them all in about 3 weeks). kenshin is awsome too, one of my favourites.
ghost in the shell is awsome too, im yet to get my hands on any of the series tho

Did you mean Coen brothers?
Other great films are
Heat - probably my favourite film, with Rob DeNiro and Al Pacino face to face. One of the best shooting scenes ever in a movie (lots of Michael Mann stuff is great)
La Femme Nikita (lots of Luc Besson is great)
Human Traffic - you have to kinda of be experienced in this to see how damn funny and true it is.

I'll leave the Hollywood films 'coz they've been covered.
These are some must-see Hong Kong films that I can think of off the top of my head:
Hero (if you like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, you'll like this one)
Storm Riders
The Killer (Chow Yun Fat classic)
God of Gamblers series (including the Stephen Chow sendup)
Once Upon A Time In China series
Fong Sai Yuk 1 & 2
Any vintage Jackie Chan (Fearless Hyena is my fav)
There's plenty more that I can't think of... But those will do.

If you like the weird quirky kinda humour then you just HAVE to see "Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas".
Best Johnny Depp movie ever.
Little did he know... this was BAT country.
|
Fear Loathing is great - "we were at Barstow, on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold"
Once Upon a Time in China rocks as well - especially the "umbrella in the tea house" scene with it's Mary Poppins homage!
Try to find "Sex and Zen". Hilarious, full of titty and some cool fighting scenes.

haha The Secretary, what a wierd arse movie that was.
yeh Heat is a classic, its long but damn its entertaining.
also Training Day with Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington, one of my fav movies, fuck Denzel Washington is a cruel cunt in it, the original ending is cool too.
and Ronin, my favourite car chase action scene sequence ever, that Audi A8 with NOS, ohh yeah!! the fact that its set in France and Europe just adds to it lol.
