I hope the cars are not as slow as that web page
Hey dude, what kind of labour costs could myself expect for a engine build? Not including the parts of course?

shane it all depends on what you want. pick what you want from the list.
forged pistons.
o-ring.
nitrited.
balanced.
arp bolts.
head service or rebuild head.
aftermarket cams.
so you see the price can vary. work out how much boost you want to run and what you want done to the engine or just a straight rebuild.

O.K, What kind of performance builds have you done with the 1UZ-FE?
I'd assume that most of the bottom end would stay, but what about higher comp pistons, "G" spec cams etc...

i may be wrong here but is that commodore on the site a VT and not a VX like the site says, as the front headlights don't have the tear drop shape like the VX is meant to have

biased99 we havnt done a 1uz but we have been starting to workout ideas for them. that said there has never been a motor that has left the shop that the customer hasnt been over the moon with. we fix alot of motors that have been rebuilt by some of the better known work shops for jap engines{ i wont name them but lets say 99% of them} had one two weeks ago that we had to rebuild that the customer had payed nearly $8000 for a 1.8l turbo motor that had cast pistons and 10-1 comp. the thing blew head gaskets every ten minutes. we cc every turbo motor to make sure comp ratio is exact.
my best advice is to think of what you want from the engine and then how much you want to spend. here is a few suggestions, if you want more power turbo or supercharger would be the go, i would bring the comp ratio down to 8-1 for higher boost{12-25psi} or bring it down to 8.5-8.9 for mod boost{5-12psi}. if you want to stay natural id change valve springs to higher rate and put large valves in. then look at the flow of the heads and see if they can be increased much but knowing toyota there wouldnt be to much to gain from them. cams i would get for you would be from one of our suppliers that can give us the best they have gained from the 1z. then i would look at the intake system and see if its cost effective to change for the gain it will yeild. then we can make or have made extractors to suit the engine and finally pick an aftermarket computer that suits you. we will always give you the choice but will advise you on the best.
it really all comes down to the money you want to spend.
we never say its going to cost $2000 then in the end it costs $7000 as so many guys in this forum will tell you has happened to them. we will give you a figure to work on and it will be very close to that unless along the way you want to add to it!
god i hate typing.

The headlights look to be VT spec but the rear of the car is VX spec with the bootlid and rear lights... I must say though, that is one FAT commodore...

Would it be too much to ask to actually see the car in the flesh, when its not out on the track? Is that possible or just too much of an invasion of their workshop?
plus if those are street cars id love to see their track cars

Out of interest.. roughly what sort of money would your shop charge for a mild port&polish, port match, and +1mm oversive valves in an 8 valve fourbanger?
