It really depends on what you plan on doing with the sprinter. A 4age is a decent upgrade from the old 4ac and will give you a reasonable increase in power as well as being an economical engine. Something like that would be suitable for someone who would drive the car on a daily basis.
As for where you can get an engine, sss automotive in sydney sell them for a good price i believe.

4A-GE definitly a good upgrade, but don't waste your money on an old RWD levin motor..go to a reputable Wrecker (if there is such a thing) or a place that imports front cuts etc..and get a late model 100Kw small port 4AGE these motors will outlast and outperform the olderones, they a built a bit stronger, and will have alot less Km's on them, you can find them in aussie AE92 corollas look for the engines that don't have T-VIS ritten on the intake plemnum..even better do what i did, put a 4AGZE (supercharged) in, OHH WHAT A FEELING INDEED!!! (mine already had a 4AGE in it)

more to do with your original Question..the motor the aussie sprinters get is a 4A-C single cam (we never get the good motors ), 8 valve, non cross flow head, caburettor equiped engine, rated at about 56kw (if that) not all that crash hot right..the 4AGE is one of, if not the best engine toyota has built/designed (ask anyone on this forum, they will tell you the same ) all of them sport Fuel injection (hence E in the name 4a-gE) and G means they have a Twin-cam head with the valves at 45 deg or greater (designed for the sporty range of toyotas motors) i could go on forever about them, but there are many great pages on them, like this one..

on the contrary, the 100kw and the 86kw doesn't have much difference.
a jdm rwd engine will have less conversion hassles.
also, I heard somewhere that they fractionally have more torque than a 100 kwter

if your planning to buy a sprinter and then do the conversion i highly recomend just buying one with the conversion already done. It usually works out quite a bit cheaper in the end anyway

But then you have a car that someone has already thrashed the guts out of...
Do it yourself man, you will appreciate the vehicle more and you will learn more.
Seriously do it yourself

there are almost ZERO parts that are the same between the smallport and bigport 4A-GEs.
THe block, head, cams, pistons, crank, rods, manifolds, looms, ecu, injectors, water pumps, etc etc etc.... these are ALL different.
i recommend the 100kW (smallport) version. Its not nearly as hard as people make out.

hey,
a few months ago i did the 100kw 4age conv. into my AE86 and....... ho what a feeling indeed!!!! do it. no question about it. if u can, drive someones car that already has one in it then u will see what your in for. the conversion was pretty easy. i did it all myself and had minimal dramas.
it makes the ae86 come alive.
cheers

The 4A-GE is the heart and soul of a sprinter.
Go for it. I remember someone in these forums wanted a trade for a case of VB for his 4A-C hahaha
Good luck.
I run a 86kw in mine and it's just lovely.
