icon8.gif  Coolant leaking from pump - why!? Thu, 02 September 2004 11:48 Go to next message
I flushed and changed my coolant today, and this afternoon its started leaking like a tap from the hole shown in the attached pic! It was the first time I've done the coolant on a Celica, so I've probably screwed up somewhere - here's the whole story:

Chapter 1 - how I did it
I drained the radiator, flushed it, refilled it and added the cleaner then ran it for about 15 min. At this point I realise that the drain on the radiator is still open and it had almost run dry. Next I flushed out the cleaner from the radiator and block, filled it up with fresh coolant and started the car.

At idle, the revs would increase to about 2g's then drop back down to about 900 (normal idle). I'm guessing this is because the pump was dry? I topped up the coolant, let it sit for a few minutes and checked it again - seemed to be normal. Took it for a short drive around the block. During the drive the temperature suddenly rose. After letting it cool, got it home, added more coolant (double checked for air in the hoses), let it idle for a few minutes. Took it for a drive and it was 100%.

Chapter 2 - What went wrong?
A few hours later, checked for leaks and didn't find any. Drove about 3k's up the road and it starts steaming. Checked it out, did a U turn and came home - by this stage steam is pissing out of it.

Jacked it up and traced the leak to that hole. Its on the water pump housing behind the alternator (picture taken of my spare motor). The coolant flows from that hole steadily when the engine is running at idle. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

Sorry about the short novel of a post, its just that this is the fourth thing to go wrong with the car this month and ITS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!

When the seals in the water pump go, that is where they leak from I believe.

I'm guessing that running the pump with no water damages the seals, and you need replace the water pump now.

Cheers

It was only for about a minute at most, but yeah - i fear it's something along those lines. Can the thermostat get jammed if you backflush the block? Should I try flushing the system again and see what happens?

Time for a new pump...once they leak there they are stuffed. flushing your engine probably just moved the stuff that was blocking it.

Damn, that sucks. I'm still broke from having to replace the clutch last month... anyone know an affordable mechanic in outer east melb? I'm through with DIY repairs! Razz

Would the pump be stuffed, or is it a gasket of some sort? If so, could I salvage the pump off the spare engine?

yeah Andy, sorry to say but your waterpump is stuffed. Sad same exact same thing happened to my brothers ra40 celica and i put a new one on and it was all good. that car is a much easier job than yours thou.
when the seal goes on the pump, the water runs out that drain hole.
i was told to just buy a new pump.i don't think u can change the seal, or its not worth doing.something like that. if your waterpump on the other engine is still good, then i'd use that.
if you decide to change it yourself, i could give you a hand. Smile

you could try some chem weld as a real temporary fix(usually for head gaskets but should seal that)but replace the pump as soon as ya can afford it.. cheaper than fixin a cooked motor Smile

Chemweld hey... interesting...

Ah wel, I was kinda hoping it was something I'd done wrong seeing as the pump kinda died at the same time i did the rest of that stuff. Gives me an excuse to change that overdue timing belt too I guess. Confused

My sisters v6 eunos spat the seals in her pump on a highway. Cooked the motor - $2700 worth of damage. Bennt both heads, just fucked everything.

Not worth it for $80 from repco mate.

Ya i'm with everybody else once it leaks from that spot it means the seal has shat itself. The water pump can be fixed but the cost of a new pump would out weigh the amount of phucking around to fix the stuffed one.

I am wondering if the previous owner of my car would change it over for u, originally my water pumps seals were replaced but they ended up still leakin so i got a new water pump when i bought the car...

But yeah shouldn't be much i don't think...

Anyone give him advice on how to install it?

Yeah, I knew that - just didn't expect the pump to be dry! I've never seen this happen before, how do you prime a water pump in a motor? So dumb in hindsight, but there's only one way to learn i guess!

I'll have to get it done by a mechanic (or atleast someone who knows what they're doing) - its a b#@ch of a job getting that pump out in these cars. Confused

I don't think you need to prime as such. I've done a few coolant changes and havent stuffed anything yet.

In my car (Ae824age) it has a thermostat stopping water entering engine from radiator. So if you only fill up the radiator and overfill you won't be getting anything into pump till thermo opens. I took the top radiator hose and put the hose in there to fill up the \pump/engine side. Tighten everything up (Fill radiator with water/coolant) run with radiator cap of to bleed bubbles. Mine frothed quite a bit to start with but that is apparently just the water pump churning things up quite a bit at first (that's what I got told here anyway)

Good luck
