icon3.gif  Othere heavy duty clutches othere than rpm Thu, 02 September 2004 12:06 Go to next message
Hey just been told rpm cluthes are poor because there pressure plates are not much more pressure than stock, and they are 30%heavier than a stock clutch,

I would be after a brass button clutch but still with the springs in the center so it still have some give, anyone know which way i should go.

It is to go behind a 2tgeu which in future i wish to use as a track race car, power level would be something like 100-120 rwhp but would like something which could hold a little more.

thanks

Jason

It might help if you told us which car/engine/power level you have. Rolling Eyes

Direct Clutch in Albion
Jim Berry/Race Clutch in Buranda
Nick's Clutches in Archerfield

Look up their phone numbers/addreses in the phone book - they all make custom clutches. Take them your clutch assembly (flywheel/driven plate/pressure plate/thrust bearing), tell them what weight your car is, how much power it has, and what you want to use it for. They will custom build you a clutch that will do all of those things without going overboard.

I have dealt with all of these companies over the years. In my experience:

* Direct Clutch are small on chit-chat but have good pricing, excellent products and excellent service
* Jim Berry/Race Clutch can talk your ear off, have excellent products but intermittent service and high pricing.
* Nick's clutches are cheap and friendly but both service and products are of intermittent quality

As for a button plate - some people have trouble driving on them and can find them annoying, they cause you to break stuff when driving enthusiastically, and they're just plain unnecessary with your desired power output. I guarantee that each of these shops will have a quiet chuckle to themselves if you ask for one.

I suggest you go in and ask for "A flywheel surface, new thrust bearing, uprated clamp and a full face driven plate to suit 150rwhp in a car that weighs xxxx. The car will be used primarily for street driving and occasional circuit work."

Expect somewhere between $250 and $500 for a quality job - but it's hard to pigeonhole. You can pay as little as $100 for a stock clutch, up to $1000 for a custom single plate, and upwards of $4000 for some multi-plate clutches.

From my dealings with direct clutch I can highly recommend them.

I have a 4 puck solid centre clutch and custom pressure plate (sorry I don't know the pressure rating but it is higher than what they rate as their heavy duty rating). I just told them what I was after (car type, power output etc), sent them my old set up and the new stuff came back. The previous heavy duty pressure plate began slipping in 3rd, 4th and 5th on boost (1st and second just slipped the wheels instead Very Happy )

It works brilliantly, was well priced and IS very driveable on the street (my girlfriend can drive it no probs in the traffic). It bites nice and hard though if you drive it that way.

I will be going back to them in the future.

They do take a couple of weeks to a few weeks when I have ordered from them, so try not to be in a rush if you go with them.

Cheers.

Direct clutch = the goods. Always expect them to take a bit longer than they say though!

my CUSTOM clutch from dougie at Nicks performance clutchs was only $460

it involes a 4 puck sprung centre, with carbodic pads
a TRD 'Built up' pressure plate (80% stronger than stock 4age)
i needed it this hardcore because it was going into my ZE AE86, and i didn't want clutch slip! with the undersized 8" surface that it uses.. it's a breeze to drive in traffic, just took 5 mins to get used to, (like any different car you first drive)
and also my car is a drift car, so i need the clutch all the time, and ceramic clutchs only get better when they heat up Very Happy

there are two availble for the Ta22 one they both have the same clutch plate which is

Pressure PLate: Heavy Duty Clutch Cover 550kg Clamp Load approx 70% over standard

And the two different clutplates are:

Option one: DCO Clutch Disc dampened hub with cushioned organic facings

Option two: DSB Clutch Disc dampened hub with solid ceramic facings

I can tell clutch plate two is a better option but can someone explain what the benifit are and the bad things about this clutch, is this a brass button clutch.
thanks.

Clutch 2 looks to be a solid 4 puck ceramic button clutch. This type of clutch would have is the better clutch to be able to hold power but would have a very harsh pedel. (It would operate more like an on off switch) With this clutch if you ride it to get of the lights ect you will find that you will shorten the life of the clutch. Other than that it will hold more power that the clutch no1. If you are you used to a normal organic clutch you will prob hate this item, i know i do, it gets extremly annoying with all the jerkiness and shuddering. I would choose clutch 1 for a street setup. Its a real pitty you can't get a cushioned ceremic button clutch in the 2t.

Cheers Adam
