Mate to be honest I have no idea if anything special was done to the Factory 3TGTE pistons but they are not forged to the best of my knowledge. They sure as hell don't hold up very well in extreme conditions ! I have a set of them here and every piston has detonated the ring lands off !!
Not sure what caused it wasn't mine when it happened !

i bet if we set up a poll for 3TGTE owners, you'd find that 7 out of 10 would have broken a piston at some stage!
I've busted two, then bit the bullet and bought forgies. They're noisy as hell, and more expensive than i'd ever want to pay for 4 pistons again!
I would buy aftermarket cast pistons, ACL now make them for the 3TGTE. They are stronger than the factory shitters, and much cheaper and quieter than forgies.
If you still have the factory computer, ditch that too, unless you plan to only ever run factory boost levels, or make no other mods...
BTW, factory toyota 3TGTE pistons cost me $170 each WITHOUT rings. And yes, it broke too. DETONATION IS THE ENEMY!

Sean Moloney at Toyota Twin Cams in Melbourne is pretty good for finding bits for the 3t-gte. He can line up Ross forged pistons for $1200-1400 a set with rings, or replacement factory with rings for $750 or so. I think his phone number is (03) 9428 5277, but that's just going off memory, I couldn't find it at home. I'm just picking up a set of forgies for $900 so I'm happy... just need the rest of the money to use them now...

Okay, decided that I might sell the pistons. brand new, opened box to check 'em out. Including the rings.
These are the same as sold by repco, PN: 4K RY2735 +40
Piston and ring set for 3T, 40 thou over.
$100AUS + shipping.

I think Yellowrolla meant $1100 the set at least I hope he did or I got ripped !!! I got my last 2 sets of Forgies from them as well. They seem pretty good. Can't comment on the last set they are in but its not yet running.

I'm going to sell those above pistons for about $75 AUS + shipping.
3T Pistons, 40" over. Repco sold, only opened to look at.
