I'm losing bass re!

I have two 12" subs in the back of the peugeot, obviously boxed and all. The people who installed it didn't do a very good job, but never the less, they work. Now until recently, these subs were making decent bass, until the box became dislodged due to some exciting driving. This meant the box could slide around, and soon enough wires started to pull out and it slid around. So I eventually pulled it apart and tied it down properly and replugged in all the wires. Now the box is in tighter than when the installer did it, and it's sitting marginally closer to the back seats. The curious thing is that now it doesn't make anywhere near the bass it used to. With the boot lid closed that is. When I open the boot lid, the bass comes back good and strong, louder and harder than ever before.. Now,WTF is going on?? I can't see that it's getting a better earth or something when the boot lid is open, because it just doesn't make sense, and this phenominon didn't occur prior to the box being re-arranged.
My thoughts are that for some reason because the box is closer to the back seats, when the boot lid is closed, I get some sort of anti-nodal position that I didn't get prior to the movement, and when the lid is open, the anti-nodal position is removed.
What are peoples thoughts?

Hmm, Strad you do know that outright SPL from a speaker box placed in the boot will be effected by the placement and positioning of the box relative to where you r sitting, try taking my suggestion into account of turning the box around so that the subs are firing rearward, and upgrade that shitty wire that RIO sound and vision call power and speaker cables.

Did you maybe wire one of the speakers backwards so that when boot is closed the sound waves cancel each other out and when opened the sound waves aren't reflecting back on each other so you get full volume?

hey, thanks for the input dude appreciate it. However, I didn't remove the speaker cables, which means I can't have swapped them. Good thought though.

So was it the amp wiring that was ripped out (I take it the amp is attached to the box)?
Is there a phase switch on the amp that may have been bumped?
To check if it may be wiring (maybe chaffing on the interior light wires to the boot or something) open the boot and then use a large board or heavy blanket across the opening. If it is being caused by sound waves (box positioning or speaker phase) the bass will die the same as having the boot closed, if it doesn't then the boot wiring is the problem.
Hope this helps
