Hey all,
okay, I'm looking to either buy a Toyota 4Runner or a Hilux surf
the 4Runner is 89' model, 2.4L, 22R 4Cyl Petrol and 4 door.
the Surf is an 88 model, 2.4 Turbo diesel but only 2 door.
Would they both be able to tow a tandem trailer with out probs? how are they on fuel?
Any well known problems for either of them or no?
any more info about the two would be great thanks!
PS, don't say buy something else, because i like these but cant decide.
thanks
Geoff
EDIT, also, would like to do some 4x4ing with either one too....

In General the Diesel will be cheaper to run and tow better than the petrol, although neither are great tow cars or have great accelaration, but both will do the job. The turbo diesels are known for head failure when not correctly maintained but that applies to most cars.
@ doors can be a hassle depending on your circumstances but can also just be a matter of getting used to.
what sort of money are they asking?

Strathfieldsaye actually and originally caught the bug for toyotas with a 2tg powered KE20 (jap model). Used to tow a formula ford behind a 2.4l turbo diesel Hi Lux ok at 80 to 90 k struggles at 100 a little but will do it, petrol is similar but chews fuel when towing.
Personnally my current tow car is a 3.5l pajero but price is a lot higher than your price range.
200000k is pretty low kays for vehicles of that age, so basically would come down to personal preference on ergonomics etc, although I would probably go for the surf.

cool cool
the only prob with a surf is that they are bloody 2 door, and a bit to "flash" for me in side, power windows/cloth trim/sun roof, etc etc
i kinda dont want anything to 'good' as i'll be taking it off road a bit 4x4ing and using it for work, but i also dont want a shitter tho...

Watch out for insurance. It sounds stupid, but I knew someone who wanted to get a Surf, and their insurance company classified it as a "sports car" car having 2 doors and a turbo Maybe they just didn't like him or something....
