max boost on 7MGTE Sun, 22 September 2002 01:01 Go to next message
What is the maximum boost I can run on a standard 7MGTE with 3" cat back exhaust and air filter? I am running 10psi now and want to turn it up to 14psi but am worried about my head gasket. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Knowing that these engines r prone to head gasket failure suggests to me that if you do intend to up the boost to 14psi that you make sure that the charge air is kept at a reasonable temp, and have the computer tuned to suit the fuel that you use and the mods you have done to the car. This should at least keep the engine from detonation hence causing head gasket failure.

Torque that head down before you think about boosting it any further. After that it's a bit of a gamble, but if it doesn't detonate you might be OK.

Reg Reimer in Canada seems to have done a bit of work on the head gasket problem

It seems that a few people have had head gasket problems even with standard boost.

Make sure u run the factory red toyota coolant too to stop corrosion on the head and increase head gasket weakening. Lots of 7mgte with blown head gaskets have been running on aftermarket coolant. You'll also hit boost cut if you tweak much more than 10-12psi.
