1jz gearbox into MZ61

ok, the ma61 is (almost) mine.
now I've heard the 1jz-gte gearbox (w154?) doesn't fit in the stock transmission tunnel. I was wondering, what sort of modifications have to be made here ... and how much is it likely to set me back?
or will it simply be better to grab the 2jz-ge gearbox and fit that (since it does fit)...
and which of the 2 can handle more stress? the w154 i imagine

firstly,
what in gods name is a mz61 ???? you mean jza61??
secondly, fitting the R154 into the tranny tunnel is a biaztch. whether or not this is the stock tranny behind a 1jzgte i dunno. either way, R154 into ma61 is not worth it.
secondly, the 2jzge tranny is just a w58. the later model does have a slighter larger input shaft and bearing, but thats the ONLY diff. oh, plus the shifter housing is in the wrong spot for a ma61, so you gotta make a custom one (or retrofit someting onto it). considering youve already got a w58, rebuild it amnd just use it, meanwhile, waste the rest of your time trying to find a 2j w58 manual bellhousing...
mz61?? yeash!!??
cheers

yeah, i think he means jza61...either way, the manual box behind the 1JZGTE from the factory is a R154, which doesn't fit in the MA61 tunnel without beating in some of the ribs, or actually getting the tunnel enlarged. Then you have the problem that the gearstick will come up a good few inches further back.
Ultimately, might be better to find a later model W58 with a 2JZGE bellhousing. See how Norbie's holds up once its running

well first up i must say that was a good choice to purchase that supra, it is in quite nice condition, and the engine in it is perfect , which is a good thing because your going to need to drive around untill you get all the bits for your conversion, because theres no point in stqarting it untill you do.
having almost completeed what your about to start ill give you a list of what youll need,
2JZge gearbox,flywheel/fork,cutch,pressure plate, starter motor, bell housing: you are asking for big dollars plus an equally big screw around trying to put a 154 in the MA61, dont forget that the 2JZge W58 box is the most modern of its kind and is stronger than the old one (as well as less worn out) and it will handle the power of the JZ.and it is easier and cheaper
you will need a custom radiator to fit the hydraulic fan i had mine made from a ma70 radiator
new power steer lines,
engine mounts, easiest if i get mine copied
and im not sure just yet but perhaps a custom swaybar underneath
a front mount sump (chaser ) i may have one spare not sure yet,
and many many hours of stuffing around
as well as alot of room
hope this helps a little anyway.

FWIW my 2JZ cleared the swaybar... just. That's with the crank in the same plane as the original 5M, and using the stock gearbox mounting points. The 1JZ is the same length so you should be right.

jaze ... was that just a 2jz bellhousing, or a 2jz fly, clutch etc as well? I couldn't imagine the 1jz bottom end would be all that different.. but I'll take your word for it, you having been there before
and how much did the 2jz components set you back?
and did you leave your crossmember in the same place, or do a custom one like norbie?
(and expect lots of pestering messages from me in the future)
say, are you dave's friend, who was doing the 1jz conversion he mentioned?
