4A SC Corolla AE82 needs 4AG engine which one? Tue, 07 September 2004 05:02 Go to next message
G'day all, I bought a Corolla AE82 LM5FB cheap as, and the engine uses more oil than fuel. What are my options for putting in the 4AG or the 4AG-EFI engine? I see there are several versions including late turbo models from 86KW up to 180 and the price of the 4AG Engines range from $500 to $1000 depending on condition so I can afford to spend as the car as I said was cheap. Its 5 speed manual SECA hatch version pretty pedestrian. Disc/Drum so may need a rear disc conversion. What fits in that area??? All advise is most welcome especially about the 4AG engine whether to go efi or stay with the solex carby version if it exists still. maybe best to buy a whole car which I already did already...

4AGE, all came standard with Fuel injection..there are heaps around with 4age's in them..these are the 86kw version..you will need a front cut from one of these and put it all in, box, shafts, struts, brakes, wiring, you can also grab the rear break assembelly of these and bolt it in..you need to upgrade your fuel pump also..i think it would be alot of trouble..
just to put it in perspective..

$1200 4AGE front cut (you need basicly everything in the front cut)
$300-400 wiring if you can't do it..
$150 or so for fuel pump, and lines
$??? disc brakes in the arse
a good 4-5 days of your life (not much, but if you don't have someone to help Confused )
there are always unforseen costs in coversions too..so leave another couple of hundred at least!

and you can't test drive a front cut, so you don't know if the clutch is stuffed, g/box is shit etc..

i prolly would suggest to sell it, and grab an AE82 Twin Cam..you can pick them up from car yards for less than $4500..and they have alot more options than a lesser model CS and everything would be factory..no conversion gremlins..it's up to you..

just also throwing this in..you could whack the 4AGE in minus the whole EFI thing..and put some twin sidedrafts on it..they rev really hard with carbies, but are not as streetable as EFI..this would save you on the fuel pump..wiring..having to by a front cut!!..and all extra you need to do is get the dizzy sorted out..with one that doesn't require the ECU

also..there were never any factory 4age turbo motors.. and the peak power out of any 4age (factory) never peaked above 125KW (or so) and that was out of the engine i have in my car 4AGZE (supercharged version)
