putting bigger wheels on a car... Wed, 08 September 2004 06:32 Go to next message
Hey guys, selling the Seca soon, promised a mate I would chuck him the wheels for his AE80, just wondering if there is anything you have to do when changing the wheels to a bigger size (from 13" to 14" or 15" rims), like get the speedo reconfigured? I know he will have to get a wheel alignment but is that all?

Cheers for any info.

That has everything to do with the circumference of the tyre, and has nothing to do with the size of the rims. If you go from 13" to 14"s, but have lower profile rubber on the 14s in order to maintain the same circumference then - no problem.

As for a wheel alignment - I doubt it, unless they are a really different width and you need to change the toe for some reason. Did you mean wheel balance?

EDIT: AE80? If that's a pre AE86 corrolla, then it's rwd. A Seca is fwd... Razz

ah ok then wheel balance is what I meant then I guess!
The wheels I am gonna give him are just stock AE82 Seca rims, with standard tyres, they just look better than the steelies currently on his AE80
(AE80 is just an earlier model corolla with a 1.3 maybe 1.4L engine, opposed to the AE82 that the wheels are coming off which has the 1.6 4A {but both have identical dash boards and instument clusters, only difference being that the AE82 has a clock(AE80 has the hole where the clock should be and it just has a plastic insert instead, and the instrument cluster on the AE80 just has a speedo and an empty spot that says corolla-which is where the tacho is on the AE82}

so can he just put the wheels on and get a wheel balance and thats it, or is there a bit more to it??

Thanks Heaps.

I hope they do. An AE86 IS a Corolla, and were only called a Sprinter for the Aus market AFAIK.

BTW I hope you understand the concept of offset and the difference between fwd wheels and rwd wheels. There is a bit more to it.

The ae80 is just a lower version of the Ae82. It has a smaller engine ( 1.3 4spd manual )and less accesories..

As for changing the wheels, all that is needed is to make sure that the circumference stays the same, then no adjustment to the speedo will have to be made...

Il talk to you tomorro about it Whitchy
