Mx62 Cressida, Cold Start Probs, Fueling Up.

Today i got into the cressida after work every is normal... the auto choke or cold start system seems to stick on as per usual ive gotten used to it.. anyway down the road about 2km's still cold the motor starts to surge a bit and blow excessive black smoke.. so i pull over too a rest bay..
At idle it was blowing black smoke.. and idling rough betweeen 400-600rpm.. give it any throttle and it would blow even more black smoke from the exhaust and wouldnt rev over 1,500rpm sounded as if it had a rev limiter.. lol
May i add when warm half temp on the gauge the car runs fine.. blows a bit of black smoke when you boot it but you can live with that.. Fuel economy is like i own a N/A Rotor.. 200ish k's to a full tank.. i think the best i ever got was 250km's i was stoked..
Could my AFM meter be the problem ? Could the oxygen sensors in the exhaust be faulty ? I know i havent got any throttle body leaks..
I am a 1st year apprentice mechanic so i do understand mechanical terms.. and have a good idea on how to do things just need an idea into what to look at first
Thanks

Could be a faulty thermo switch for the cold start injector. Try unplugging the cold start injector and see if the problem goes away.
A faulty AFM is another possibility, but your car doesn't have an oxygen sensor so that can't be it!

Hmm, sounds like its over fueling? BTW mx62 cressida's are pre 1986 so we didn't get them with O2 sensors over here, so that can't be the problem.
It maybe that the cold start injector is stuck open/leaking? (tho I would think that this would cause the engine to stall) It's quite an easy check tho. The cold start injector is only held in by two screws/bolts (its in the middle of the top of the inlet manifold, stands out like dogs balls ), remove the screws, plug the manifold so as not to cause a giant vacuum leak, and start/crank the car, if the cold start injector dribbles all the time, or doesn't turn off I'd suggest its leaking and would be best to replace it! The cold start injector should only operate during cranking when the coolant temp is under 35deg C to my knowledge, and should spray a nice fine mist if working well!
Another option is the sensor that the ECU uses for temperature enrichment...I think when I was playing with mine I used this curve as my guide, if your not sure if its working unplug it (the car will run very, very poorly, and prbly not idle even!).
I don't think that its the Air Bypass Valve (ABV) due to the way that it idles up/auto chokes from the way to describe it, but again its easy to check.
Hmm besides that, maybe a sticky injector (long screwdriver to the ear test?), I'm out of options pretty well!
Cheers

Thanks wilbo.. it could be both problems... both a leaking cold start injector and or a leaking fuel injector.. those are making for sense to myself now
Ive noticed after the rebuild it has been pinging really bad.. ive already taken alot of timing out of the engine.. and today after a long trip, doing 3,200rpm in 3rd gear as overdrive doesnt want to engage put your foot down half way eeeeeeeeeeek pinging really bad.. like it used to do when it had standard timing in it.. i think standard is 12 degree's now its 8.. and still pinging its head off.. i think i should do a compression test to see what the compression is like..
What should it read ? 160psi ? or less? the motor is fairly new..

Hmm my hynes manual lists 156psi as standard compression @ 250rpm (seems a bit lower that what I'd expect tho )
minimun is listed as 128psi (oh my lord low) , and also max difference of 14psi between cyls.
btw when you check the timing are you disconnecting the vacuum advance? (you are meant to set the timing with the vac advance disconnected). Also I have 8deg as the standard timing in my book.

Tis pretty easy to see. I doubt it'd be removed....
