Well considering when you go from low-beam to high beam, all the bit the low-beam was lighting up disappears, I'd say they aren't on at the same time

i know mine's wired that way, but hey, i never had relays in my car (unless you count the flasher can )
so you're saying yours are wired that way too?

Seeing as you've now got spare lights, why don't you chuck the relays in to power both filaments, and lets us know how long they last? If they blow within hours/days/weeks/months, we know it's not worth doing!

what EMP said
some cars if you hold it juuuust between high and low beam, you get DUAL POWAH headlights..
so only one filament is on at a time..

Hey Stu
I've never seen a car that has both filaments in the same globe on at the same time on purpose.... (unless you count brake/tail lamps)
The only car i've ever owned that the low beam didnt turn off when high beam turned on was my ZH Fairlane, but they have seperate high and low beam lamps, like the early Celica's, but unlike the celicas each lamp only has 1 filament.
On my ute i've got 90/130W globes in brand new 7" reflectors.
All of this stuff can be bought from supercheap rather cheaply...
The light from the new 7" lamps is better than the original with the factory driving lights !
but with the Narva 175mm driving lights in place of those it was a different story !
I dont think its worth trying to run both filaments at the same time, as you suggest it would probably over heat...
But ! If you have sealed beams you might be able to get away with it due to the whole thing being filled with gas...

From looking at the wiring diagrams on my sprinter, it should theoretically turn off when the beams are switched, however this isnt the case .

If you've got sealed beams, do it anyway, last time I bought any they were that freaking cheap that it's worth the experiment

thats an interesting idea! but i'm less keen on cracking the new lenses...
yup, hold halfway to 'flash' and both come on.. and it'ds good! which is what prompted the question...
well, i had sealed beams, and they sucked.. then went to cheap halogen lenses with 90/120's, and they were better, but now with the Hellas and 55/60's they are even better.
i think the answer will be in better globes... either xenon "Plus 50" 55/60's... or 55/100's.. since the low beam is fine.. just the high beam is not "road melting" enough...
hmm, we could do a static test of high beam tho (but without the cooling effect of wind) and see how long thing slast... buggered if i'm gonna sit in front of a globe until it blows tho .. anyone have a datalogging luminesence meter??
thanks for all the ideas

actually.... if someone wants to donate a 12V 20 amp lab power supply, i'll supply globes and "burn the fuckers out" .. time to failure to the nearest day

okay,
i have a donated BRAND NEW Xenon Plus30% globe (i think it's a wagner?) that i want to burn out...
does anyone have a 12Volt 20Amp regulated power supply i could borrow until the globe fails?

when i switch to high beam my low beams stay on and i havent had any problems yet, aside the bodgey wiring job the previous owner did to make them operate that way!

Hi,
12V @ 20amp is a pretty hefty DC power supply. You might get one from a computer scrapper. The old AS400 midrange and some of the RS/6000 machines had some pretty hefty switched power supplies that may put out that much.
On the old quad-light Celicas I've seen 150/200W clear lens "aircraft landing light" units replacing the inside hi-beam units. So bright that you can see the spot in your eye image for a long time afterwards. These babies melt the road at night - and probaly your wiring harness unless it's set up correctly.

Low beam and hi beam are ment to be two individual circuits.
Having both beams on at once in a single bulb will shorten its life, by how long i don't know.
To work out what amperage you need, add how many watts are being used and divide by twelve. eg 2x100w bulbs=200w divide by 12v=16.67amps.
