Hi guys i wanted to know if anyone could help me i am trying to decide what the better option is i have a 1g-gte and it has a spun bigend bearing;
1: Take to engineering shop get repaired,balanced,cracktested etc?
2; Buy an new one and do above, pretty simple i know but if i can save the trouble of getting a new one it would be easyer because they have said its realitivly cheap to fix
Anyhow any advice would be helpfull, and also some background to what im aming for is 200Kw out of her thanx
Andrew
Ps is it worth getting hardened?

Be warned, big end bearings for these ain't cheep, I am currently searching for some and it appears that toyota are the only people that have them and they want $40+GST each. If your pulling out the crank, then you should probably put in new crank journal bearings as well. I guess they would be around the same price and there is 7 of them.
Another 1G will cost you $500 and comes with a pair of turbos.
If you find a sioource of cheap bearings for these things, please let me know, cos I will be needing to order them this week.

I have just rebuilt my 1G and it had a spun bearing. 9 times out of 10, if it has spun a bearing, the journal will be damaged and will have to be ground undersize, which will set you back the cost of machine work, crack testing, gasket set, bearings, balancing if you wish and so forth. Honestly, don't expect change from a grand, and thats not being stupid, it WILL cost that much.
My advise would be 1 of 2 things, get a complete engine, for say 500, or some places will sell just the bottom ends, for like 200. I would go that route.
Or, if you rwalyy like the idea of keeping yours, get a crank and rods from someone, should cost you 50 bucks or so, and ask if you can have the old bearings, even ask a few people for all there old bearings, and take the whole lot down to Mendhams engineering, get them to polish the new crank, resize the rods, and sort through all the bearings and pick the good ones, thats what i had to do, and they did my engine, there service was absolutely outstanding.
You can use 3sgte bearings in the main journals, but not the rods.
Cheers.................6BOOST

I have thought about a new bottom end but it now looks like i have a friend that i can get forged pistons cheap from which sounds the go so i may as well go the whole deal the guy at the engineering shop i am sussing out said they will help mind replacement bearings though the acl cat painful i know but after done i will write down everything he seemed assured they will find something to fit and with the crank i already wanted to get it balanced and hardened perhaps so the only real question to be asked is the cos of repairing the journal worth buying a new crank ? i think not after reading a bit though anyhow guys this is where im starting my 1g buildup will be back again soon to update on where i go with it and thanx so far with all the opinions good to see someone else's for a change my brothers have no clue lol and im yet to find many people about that know much if anythin....

I've had a look through the ACL catalogue, there's not too many engines with conrod bearings this small. 44.00mm is the nominal size. I think the only thing that came close was a daihatsu charade.

1G crankshaft bearings and rod bearings can be a real PITA.
ACL can supply the crank bearings I think, but for the rods you'll probably need to go to toyota This is my experience anyway... remote experience, through Fours n More.
ACL do make big end bearings for the 1G, but they may not fit, since there are a few different 1G bottom ends.
