im just about to buy a MR2 in a few days and i have a few questions i want to ask u guys...
i can work my way around a sr20det but i have no idea about these cars...
what should i watch out for?
what are the common problems in a MR2?
is there any heating problems?
what boost should it be running?
ive noticed most mr2's have 2 exhausts, where this has one... is there any downfalls of having one?
whats the maintenance like? easy to change plugs and oil??
from what i know its a JDM 94 model gen2 turbo.. whats the price range of these??
what power figures do these have?
if it is the jdm engine what is the engine model?
i currently drive a 180sx which is also rwd, is the way the car behaves in corners etc that much different with the engine in the rear??
sorry for all these questions...
thanx in advance...

All the general things. Most of the Ttops will leak in there life time, and the turbos dont like to be boosted much over stock. Seeing as they have a cremanic shaft and start to destroy themselves over time.

listed above

I have never heard of over heating problems in that model MR2. The older 80ties ones started to rust around the radiator pipes and can cause problems.

I think the stock boost is around 11-13psi. Im not 100% sure, but it shouldnt be to high with a stock turbo.

None, doesnt make a difference, as long as its a well desgined and built unit, it shouldnt give you any troubles.

Ive heard that the cam belt can be quite hard to change for first timers.

242hp @ 6000rpm and 223ft-lbs @ 4000rpm. I also think the Turbo Gen2 MR2s came with stock LSD's, not 100% sure tho

All the turbo MR2's came with 3SGTE's. There is just different versons over different years.

Heya,
They are a nice car to drive, I drive a N/A SW20, but it still packs a punch, generally beating commodore(V6's I'm guessing) of the line with ease. Corners like a car on rails(but be careful in the wet!). I've had no overheating problems and I spend a lot of time sitting in traffic. My Targa doesn't really leak at all, if it's pouring and I mean really raining for like an hour I might get 1 drip. That said when I was test driving some other MR2's I was looking at one of them leaked heaps.
Changing plugs is easy, oil & oil filter isn't too bad. Clutch, Timing belt & water pump are bitches and require copious amounts of labour, thus expensive. If you have a good mechanic you can get a clutch changed without dropping the engine out.
ALl that said, they are a awesome car, and I wouldn't drive anything else! Except maybe a '99 RZ Supra...

The Gen1 Boost cut is 12psi. But ive heard of some showing less than the stock level and boost cut being 10psi due to shotty boost gauge set up and TVIS effecting it.

I have the same engine in my car and i believe it has 220-225 bhp @ 6000, 308 nm of torque @ 3200. Dunno where Daemon got his info from, but i got some pretty different figures. Of course im not saying that mine are correct !I've heard the stock boost is 7psi. Mine somehow hits 11 though.
Cant help you with the body kit mate, good luck

to clear a few things up that people missed

if u have a 94 turbo the motor is the gen3 motor/ 205 motor. great engine. also if this is the case the turbo that will be on the car is the ct20 at it should be boosting to 13 psi std.
all gen 3 came with the lsd
if it was the gen2 motor then you would have a ct26 turbo and these run 10 psi std. the lsds were options

why do u want to do this they look hot enough..... but anyways go to carmate.com.au that will fix your needs
Quote: | is there any heating problems?

if you leave the car running for long periods of time with out moving... but this i suppose can be applied to with any import.

why dont you try and take a corner really fast and take your foot off the accelerator half way round the corner and tell me where you end up..... on second thoughs i dont want a death on my hands.....
LOL they handle so much better but you will have to adjust and probably adjust your driving style to accomidate. you will never look back at a 180 again. GO THE 2's

i picked it up today!!
awesome...
the ride is so fun!! so different to my 180.... the handling is unreal.... i tiny bit of understeer, but its a lot of fun, a bit of heel-toe down-shifting as u approach the corner and u can rip through it with a lot of throttle, the back doesnt slide out like the 180, and its follows through like its on rails.... almost glides through corners... there was a section of road with alot of chicanes and wide roundabouts... so i really gave the car a good test run, with the targa top off, the night air so cold, car running smoothly, when i pulled up at the next set of lights after the bendies, i had a big smile on my face...
i wouldnt mind taking this one to track....
the car feels very nimble and yet stable... alot of traction on hard gear changes (brass button) and launches.... heaps of fun.... i love it!!
windy roads have never been so fun....
ill post pics up as soon as i can...
its set at 8psi tunned through a EMS computer, the boost comes on evenly so its really usuable in corners, it doesnt have the harsh kick when boost comes in, so no unexpected incidents happen....
now i see why u guys like the mr2 so much...

A short shift kit adds to the fun, I put one in mine 2 weekends ago, it's a really easy job. You need to come on an Old Pac fun with us sometime if you live around Sydney. Thats a road built for MR2's.

yeah I'd be interested to know as well, I should be in the market for an m2 in the next month or so.
I'm wanting to get my hands on a gen 3 powered model, I beleive the engines changed from the gen 2 to the gen 3 sometime around october 1993? Is this correct?
