Okay, I know at least one of my turbos is bad, blows smoke and puts oil throughout intake piping.

How exactly do you test shaft play/general turbo condition yourself? I've taken the intake pipes off each turbo - do I see if there is any wagglyability (ie, play) of the impeller along the shaft by poking throuhg the intake? Or should I unbolt the turbo from the manifold too?

EDIT: took pics:

Man that's a big mess around your poor turbo's Sad

I don't know much about testing for shaft play aside from the good 'ol wiggle test, but as far as I know shaft play doesn't lead to oil mess like that does it? Isn't that usually a seal problem if oil is leaking/burning?

wiggle the shafts.
if there's more than 2mm waggle (approx) turbos are going, going, gone. As josh said, oil burning is due to seals going, but usually loose shafts is associated with seals going ([much like loose womend and stds)

Thanks guys.

Is it possible to have little play with bad seals, or not really, because if the seals have gone the turbos are most likely going too?

What are the likely causes for symptoms such as bad seals or seals+shaft play?

Turns out that both turbos have about 1mm of play. The front one spins nice and freely and evenly - the back one, however, is gritty and hard to turn in one place (i.e., bearings)

2mm is a shiteload of play for a turbo; if it's got that far it's well gone already! A tired turbo will have less play than that.
