no idea about the 18r and the 18rg, but if your budget can stretch far enough, go for 1ggte or 1ggze, I am in the middle of putting 1ggte into my 83 singlecab 2wd hilux.

Your existing 18r came with around 97hp at 5500 rpm whereas the 18rg's depending on which one has around 135hp.
In a light vehicle like the hilux an 18rg would be a wonderful transplant. The engine is a direct bolton affair and came with either dual carbs or efi.

You should be able to buy them from import yards as they are still quite popular... If not contact your local car club usually vintage rally groups and the like use these engines. A lot of these guys increase the bore to 89mm for 2200cc which doesnt ruin the beautiful high revving nature of this motor.
As for gaskets etc if you want to freshen up your motor should be readily available... The bottom end gaskets are exactly the same as your current 18r even the head gasket is almost the same just a bolt hole different so you can still use an 18r head gasket and save $$$
