yes its been done.
Buy a JZA70 halfcut and swap over the crossmembers.
No engine conversion is easy, some just piss you off less.
No idea about workshops

Hi Rozz
Your best option is to DIY, and I'm sure there are people on the forums that will give you a hand if you get stuck. Any engine conversion is an expensive and long process, and will cost you about three times as much as you originally envisage - no matter how diligent you are or how many engine conversions you have done before.
My current conversion is a 1JZGTE into a '76 Mark II. I am a DIY guy, but there are always things you need done by other people (eg. some people don't like working on suspension, or don't have the tools for certain jobs) that hold you up. In my case I have been held up for almost 3½ months so far, and the workshop in question still hasn't turned a spanner on the car. This is for a variety of reasons, and not really anyone's fault, but this is all time that the car ends up off the road. Obviously people don't normally get held up to THIS extent, but it pays to hilight extra difficulties (and associated expenses) that may pop up.
Expect to pay around $10,000 to pay someone to do the conversion. You can probably save about $4,000 by DIY.

I don't reckon my engine conversion will cost much more then the halfcut + frieght and an oil/coolant change. Yeah that's a pretty bold statemend i know.
I figure a Ma70 conversion to 1jz-gte is mostly all bolt in with minimal to no custom workd needed. maybe do the timing belt while the engine is out, if it's not leaking anywhere and the engine isn't a crapper to begin with i'll skip the engine freshen up and simply buy another bare 1jz engine wich are going quite cheap.(when/if the existing 1jz craps out) Main thing is having the JZA platform for the future 2jz-gte conversion! now that will cost abit!
Of course i plan to do it myself to save as much $$ as possible.

Yeah, you're not the first person to think that.
Good luck!

That's three months just for the steering to be done (or not done, as the case still is)! The car itself has been off the road since 26th January (engine removed same day) and I reckon it'll be on the road about that time next year!
|
ooooh ok then. That's alright

7M-Brisbane: did you read my whole post or just copy Norbie?
"I figure a Ma70 conversion to 1jz-gte is mostly all bolt in with minimal to no custom workd needed. maybe do the timing belt while the engine is out, if it's not leaking anywhere and the engine isn't a crapper to begin with I'LL SKIP THE ENGINE FRESHEN UP and simply buy another bare 1jz engine wich are going quite cheap.(when/if the existing 1jz craps out) Main thing is having the JZA platform for the future 2jz-gte conversion! now that will cost abit!"
Ok i would include engine mounts and if whatever needs replacing for the engine to work, otherwise it'll be just like the car in japan before it left for australia -thrashed! but hey i'm cheap.
now get off your pony.
